Friday Night Lights: Bishop Canevin pummels Cornell; OLSH wins big; Montour, Moon fall

Myontae Mott made the most of his nine carries Friday night, rushing for 177 yards and three touchdowns as Bishop Canevin overpowered Cornell, 44-7, in a WPIAL Class 1A Black Hills Conference football matchup at Dormont Stadium.

Mott and backfield mate Neuval Bone III alternated rushing touchdowns in the first half, with Bone scoring first on a 15-yard run and then Mott breaking loose on an 84-yard scoring burst. Bone followed with a 2-yard TD and Mott answered with a 4-yard touchdown.

A pair of two-point conversions and two Leo Shorthouse PATs gave Bishop Canevin a 30-0 lead at halftime.

Mott opened the scoring in the third quarter with his final touchdown of the night, this one from 23 yards out, and Shorthouse’s PAT made it 37-0.

Cornell finally got on the board later in the quarter when M.J. Stuckey hit Daveon Collier on a 38-yard touchdown pass, and Drake Barr’s PAT cut the Crusaders’ lead to 37-7.

Bishop Canevin’s final score of the night came on Alex Kirk’s 7-yard run.

Bone finished with 90 yards rushing on 10 carries and quarterback Brady Wagner completed 6 of 12 passes for 70 yards.

Bishop Canevin bottled up Cornell’s all-purpose threat Khylil Johnson, holding him to 41 yards on the ground in 10 carries, although he did have 88 yards in kick returns. The Crusaders defense also limited Stuckey to just 4 completions in 17 pass attempts for 33 yards.

Both teams are now 3-2 overall on the season. Bishop Canevin is 1-0 in conference play and Cornell fell to 1-1.

Seneca Valley 31, Moon Area 23

The Tigers got off to a fast start, scoring twice in the opening quarter to take a 13-0 lead on their Homecoming, but Seneca Valley’s Andrew Loebig threw for three touchdown passes to spoil the evening and lead the Raiders to a nonconference win.

Moon quarterback Andrew Cross teamed with Jayden Revis on a 15-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring and Antione Arnett broke loose on a 52-yard touchdown run to make it 13-0.

Loebig connected with Adam Gehm on a 31-yard scoring pass in the first quarter to cut Moon’s lead to 13-7 and then hit Cayden Parker on a 25-yard touchdown pass with 9 minutes, 6 seconds left in the first half. The successful PAT gave Seneca Valley a 14-13 lead, and that held up until Evan Senkevich booted a 20-yard field goal with 10 seconds remaining in the half. Senkevich’s kick put Moon on top, 16-14, at halftime.

A short punt put Seneca Valley in business at the Moon 40-yard line in the third quarter, and the Raiders went the distance to score on Parker’s 13-yard run. The extra point made it 21-16 in favor of Seneca Valley with 3:29 left in the quarter.

The Raiders added to that lead early in the fourth quarter when Loebig hit Danny Drennan on a 42-yard touchdown pass with a little under 10 minutes to play in the game. That gave Seneca Valley a 28-16 advantage.

But the Tigers would not go away, and on the next possession, Max Harkins – who played the second half in relief of the injured Cross — hit Savario Vandetti on a 70-yard touchdown pass. Senkevich’s PAT cut Seneca Valley’s lead to 28-23 with 9:23 left in the game.

The Raiders then went to work on the ground, with Parker doing most of the heavy lifting. He carried five straight times on the ensuing drive, helping to take time off the clock and setting his team up for Max Eisenut’s 41-yard field goal. That made it 31-23 with 4:06 left.

The Tigers still had a chance, as it remained a one-score game. But Harkins was picked off on the first play of the next drive, and that proved to be the clincher for the Raiders.

Harkins and Cross combined to complete 7 of 20 passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns and Arnett rushed for 81 yards on 14 carries.

Moon coach Ryan Linn said Seneca Valley did a good job of running right at the Tigers.

“We needed to do a better job in forcing them into passing situations to get off the field,” he said.

“We also had too many penalties that hurt us in key spots, and that extended drives for them.”

Mars Area 29, Montour 21

It’s not often a player can rush for 185 yards in a game and get outgained by more than 100 yards, but that’s what happened to Caden Halajcio Friday night.

Montour’s senior standout ran for 185 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns, including one from 80 yards, but Mars’ Ayden Yocum one-upped him, rolling up 324 yards and three TDs in 37 carries as the Fightin’ Planets outlasted the Spartans in a nonconference game at Thomas J. Birko Memorial Stadium.

Yocum scored on runs of 51, 5 and 56 yards for Mars, which improved to 4-1. Still, Montour made it a one-score game in the fourth quarter when Halajcio scored the second of his two touchdowns – a 32-yard run – and the Spartans completed a two-point conversion pass.

Montour held Mars on its next possession, forcing a punt that gave the Spartans the ball at their own 10 with 2 minutes remaining. But Montour quarterback Brandon Bennett fumbled when he was hit while trying to make a play, and Mars recovered, sealing the win.

Montour was ravaged by penalties, committing 15 infractions that cost them 137 yards and precious field position. The Spartans also fumbled four times, losing all four.

Bennett completed 10 of 23 passes for 141 yards and rushed for 47 yards on 13 attempts. Archie Collins scored on a 34-yard run for the Spartans, who fell to 3-2.
