Friday Night Lights: Moon Area, Montour, Cornell roll; Bishop Canevin falls to Fort Cherry

Dionte’ Henry ran for two touchdowns and passed for a third as Moon Area cruised past Baldwin, 40-7, Friday night in a WPIAL Class 5A Allegheny Six Conference game played at Tiger Stadium.

Henry put the Tigers on the board first with a 49-yard touchdown run with 4 minutes, 24 seconds remaining in the opening quarter. Blake Wilmot’s PAT made it 7-0.

After Moon’s Daiveon Taylor recorded a safety to increase the lead to 9-0, Henry scored his second touchdown of the night, this one from 13 yards out, and Moon led 16-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Tigers’ Braeden Stuart got into the scoring act early in the second quarter, going in from 16 yards out, and Taylor’s 3-yard run increased Moon’s advantage to 30-0.

Henry and the Tigers then went to the air, with Henry connecting with Jayden Revis on a 35-yard touchdown pass with 61 seconds remaining in the third quarter to make it 37-0.

Henry completed 3 of 4 passes for 69 yards and Max Harkins went 4 for 10 for 14 yards. Henry also ran for 61 yards on just four carries.

Moon coach Ryan Linn liked what he saw of Henry, who played in place of senior Andrew Cross.

“He had a great game tonight,” Linn said of the sophomore, who also had an interception on defense.

“He gave us some big plays when we needed them with his legs and with his arm. He’s a dynamic player, and it really showed tonight.”

Moon improved to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play while Baldwin fell to 0-8 an d 0-3 in the conference.

Montour 55, Ambridge 21

Brandon Bennett threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third, and Zander Stern returned a fumble for a touchdown and also scored on a pick six as the Spartans whipped the Bridgers in a Class 4A Parkway Conference matchup at Thomas J. Birko Memorial Stadium.

Caden Halajcio scored on two short runs for Montour, which improved to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Hallajcio’s two scores staked Montour to a 13-0 lead less than three minutes into the second quarter.

Bennett’s 64-yard run increased Montour’s advantage to 20-0, and his 17-yard touchdown toss to Dominic Baron with just 16 seconds remaining in the half top widened Montour’s lead to 28-0.

Bennett also connected on an 8-yard scoring pass to Dylan Rogers midway through the third quarter to make it 35-0.

Stern then got into the act by returning an interception 25 yards for a score and 30 seconds later he picked up a fumble and ran it in from 20 yards out to make it 48-0.

Cole Midili’s 3-yard run accounted for Montour’s remaining score and gave the Spartans a 55-7 lead late in the third quarter.

Montour outgained the Bridgers 414-265, with 329 yards coming on the ground.

Bennett rushed for 134 yards on eight carries and completed 7 of 11 passes for 85 yards. Stern caught four passes for 45 yards. Halajcio finished with 57 yards rushing and Archie Collins added 55 on four carries.


Fort Cherry 56, Bishop Canevin 19

Matt Sieg showed why he’s one of the state’s top players, as he ran for 270 yards and scored five touchdowns in a variety of ways to help the unbeaten Rangers run past the visiting Crusaders in a Class 1A Black Hills Conference showdown.

Fort Cherry’s Penn State-bound signal caller scored on a 70-yard run on the first play from scrimmage, which enabled him to surpass former Sto-Rox standout Lenny Williams to become the WPIAL’s all-time leader in yards from scrimmage. Williams racked up 11,559 yards in his Vikings career.

Sieg was just getting warmed up.

Bishop Canevin answered on a 77-yard touchdown pass from Brady Wagner to Damar Olds on the Crusaders’ second play from scrimmage and a failed conversion left Fort Cherry on top, 7-6.

Sieg added a 28-yard touchdown run to make it 14-6 and again Bishop Canevin answered, this time on Myontae Mott’s 16-yard run. Again, the PAT was no good and Fort Cherry led 14-12.

The Rangers then scored four straight touchdowns, with Ryan Huey going in from 8 yards out and Eli Salvini scoring in a 6-yard run. Sieg scored his third touchdown of the night, this one from 46 yards to make it 35-14.

Sieg then returned a punt 55 yards to increase Fort Cherry’s lead to 42-14.

Mott scored on a 45-yard run for Bishop Canevin, but Salvini added his second touchdown run, this one from 29 yards out, and Sieg capped the scoring by returning an interception 86 yards for a touchdown.

Fort Cherry improved to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the conference. Bishop Canevin dropped to 5-3 and 3-1.


Cornell 45, Rochester 8

Khylil Johnson rushed for 242 yards in just 11 carries and found the end zone four times, including once after he returned a fumble 48 yards, to spark the Raiders past the Rams in a nonconference game.

Cornell improved to 5-3 overall and Rochester fell to 0-7.

Johnson picked up a fumble after Rochester’s quarterback and running back collided in the backfield and the ball wound up on the ground.

Johnson scooped it up and returned it 50 yards for a score with 9 minutes to play in the first quarter, expanding Cornell’s lead to 13-0.

Johnson had given the Raiders a 6-0 lead on a 52-yard touchdown run just 11 seconds into the game, and Kenny Wade’s PAT made it 7-0.

Later in the quarter, Johnson scored on runs of 31 and 37 yards to build Cornell’s advantage to 32-0 with 5:47 to go in the second quarter.

Cornell, which improved to 5-3 overall with the win, got on the board again later in the quarter when M.J. Stuckey hit Terrance Collington in the flat and Collington went 47 yards for a score. That made it 32-0 with 1:27 remaining in the half.

The Raiders weren’t done yet, however. Johnson’s 26-yard run moved the ball to the Rochester 32, and Johnson went around left end and into the end zone with 38 seconds remaining to give Cornell a 39-0 lead.

The Raiders’ lone second-half score came on Lattae Littlejohn’s 2-yard run with 6:42 to play in the third quarter.

Littlejohn rushed for 67 yards in 13 carries. Stuckey completed 6 of 9 passes for 86 yards.


Sto-Rox 8, Carlynton 6

The Vikings secured their first win of the season in eight tries as they edged the Cougars in a Class 2A Century Conference game at Sto-Rox.

Dushawn Smith rushed for 75 yards for the Vikings and Karic Willis scored on a 30-yard touchdown.

Sto-Rox is now 1-7 overall and 1-4 in conference play. Carlynton lost its seventh straight game and is now 1-7 and 0-4 in the conference.
