John Sciulli ran for 126 yards and three touchdowns to power Carlynton to a 28-27 victory over Washington Friday night in a Class 2A Century Conference matchup at Honus Wagner Stadium.

The win keeps the Cougars’ hopes alive of reaching the WPIAL playoffs, as they improved to 2-3 in the conference and 5-4 overall going into next week’s regular-season finale.

Washington fell to 3-2 in the conference and 5-4 overall.

In other games involving West Hills area schools, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart whipped Shady Side Academy, 28-8; Cornell pummeled Chartiers-Houston, 46-14; Moon fell to Upper St. Clair, 35-7; and Sto-Rox fell to South Allegheny, 48-0.

Carlynton 28, Washington 27

Sciulli’s 1-yard touchdown run pulled Carlynton even after the Cougars yielded an 18-yard touchdown pass from Washington’s Tristan Reed to Caleb Patton that put the Little Prexies on the board first midway through the opening quarter.

Washington answered on Ameer Nelson’s 64-yard touchdown run, putting the visitors in front 13-7 after a missed extra point.

The Cougars then mounted a 96-yard drive that took 14 plays and was capped by Devonte Dean’s 2-yard touchdown run. The successful PAT kick gave Carlynton the lead at 14-13, but Washington wasted no time in reclaiming that lead, as Trenton Grooms went in from 4 yards out. A failed two-point conversion run left the Prexies’ lead at 19-14 at halftime.

Sciulli’s 1-yard run that climaxed a 65-yard, 11-play drive in the third quarter gave Carlynton the lead for good at 20-19, and after the Cougars recovered a Reed fumble, they drove 57 yards in nine plays, capped by Sciulli’s 4-yard run, making it 28-19 in favor of Carlynton.

Washington closed to within a point when Reed found Patton from 12 yards out with 6 minutes, 10 seconds remaining in the game, and a successful two-point conversion pass made it 28-27 Carlynton.

That’s when the Cougars went to work on the ground, as Sciulli and Dean combined to eat up sizable chunks of yardage and move the chains. Washington, which had just one timeout remaining in the last six minutes, never regained possession, and Carlynton ran out the clock for the win.

The Cougars used a balanced attack, rushing for 192 yards and passing for 145 yards in the win.

OLSH 28, Shady Side Academy 8

Vann Kavals once again was all over the field for Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, as he threw for two touchdowns, ran for one and returned an interception for a score as the Chargers improved to 3-3 in Class 2A Allegheny Conference action and evened their overall record at 4-4.

Shady Side Academy fell to 1-4 in conference play and 2-7 overall.

The Bulldogs picked off an OLSH pass and returned it 18 yards for a score early in the second quarter, and a successful two-point conversion pass made it 8-0.

With just under 2 minutes remaining in the half, Kavals went in from a yard out, and also carried it in on the two-point conversion to tie the score at 8-8 at the half.

Kavals connected with Ethan Davis on a 3-yard touchdown pass two minutes into the third quarter, and that gave the Chargers a 14-8 lead.

Later in the quarter, Kavals picked off a pass and ran it back 17 yards for a score, and with a little under 5 minutes to play in the game, Kavals hit Iseia Fields-Schulz on an 8-yard touchdown pass to cap the 28-8 win.

Kavals completed 23 of 33 passes for 202 yards and was intercepted twice. He also carried 11 times for 65 yards and two touchdowns for OLSH. Fields-Schulz caught six passes for 70 yards and Ty’Aire Hawkins pulled in five passes for 46 yards in the win.

Upper St. Clair 35, Moon 7

John Banbury ran for 100 yards and two touchdowns and caught one of Ethan Hellman’s two scoring passes to help the Panthers extend their season-long winning streak to nine games.

Julian Dahlem’s 1-yard touchdown run got Upper St. Clair – 4-0 in Class 5A Allegheny Six Conference play – off to a 7-0 lead in the opening quarter.

Banbury’s 7-yard scoring burst made it 14-0 before Moon sliced the lead in half on Andrew Cross’ 8-yard touchdown pass to Nick Clemens.

That was as close as the Tigers – 1-3 in conference play and 4-4 overall – would get, as the Panthers added a third touchdown on Banbury’s 12-yard run in the third quarter and then put it away with two scores in the final quarter.

Hellman connected with Banbury on a 54-yard touchdown pass and then hooked up with Charlie Bywalski on a 5-yard scoring strike to close out the scoring.

Hellman completed 8 of 13 passes for 109 yards and the two touchdowns.

Cornell 46, Chartiers-Houston 14

Khylil Johnson ran for three touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass from Mark Stuckey Jr. as the Raiders rolled to an easy Class A Black Hills Conference victory.

The win boosted Cornell’s conference record to 3-2 and the Raiders improved to 7-2 overall. Chartiers-Houston dropped to 1-5 in the conference and 3-6 overall.

Johnson scored on runs of 10, 16 and 74 yards to help stake Cornell to a 19-0 lead in the second quarter.

After the Raiders surrendered a touchdown, Paris Green returned a punt 35 yards for a score to make it 26-7.

Walter Clarit then scored a pair of third-quarter touchdowns on a 30-yard run and a 19-yard interception return, setting the stage for Stuckey’s 15-yard scoring toss to Johnson.

Cornell finished with three players rushing for more than 100 yards, as Clarit finished with 133 yards on six carries, Green totaled 109 yards on 10 attempts and Johnson needed only four carries to gain 105 yards. Johnson also caught three passes for 46 yards.

South Allegheny 48, Sto-Rox 0
