Fugitive wanted in 2024 Stowe shooting awaits extradition to Allegheny County

A Maryland man who went missing after he was charged with criminal homicide in connection with the shooting death of a man in Stowe Township in August 2024 waived extradition during a hearing held Wednesday in Prince George’s County, Md.

Dachary Lamont Sampson, 32, had court appearances both Tuesday and Wednesday after he was apprehended Monday by the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force In Bladensburg, Md., and taken into custody without incident.

A district court spokesman said Sampson waived extradition Wednesday morning and was awaiting transport to Allegheny County.

A spokesperson for the Allegheny County District Attorney’s office said that Sampson is scheduled to be picked up by the county Sheriff’s Office on or about Oct. 28 and transported to the county jail. Further proceedings will be scheduled at that time.

Sampson will remain in Prince George’s County until he is returned to Allegheny County.

Sampson is accused of fatally shooting 42-year-old James Nelson during an argument that erupted in the 400 block of Pleasant Ridge Road on Aug. 12, 2024.

Through witness interviews and surveillance videos, Allegheny County Police detectives determined Sampson was responsible for the shooting, and criminal charges were filed against him on Nov. 13, 2024.

He remained at large until Monday.

Sampson is charged with multiple crimes, including criminal homicide, terroristic threats and simple assault.

According to a criminal complaint, an altercation involving seven to 10 people began when Sampson pushed Nelson’s wife in the front yard of a home at 438 Pleasant Ridge Road. A witness told police detectives that during the fight, the witness heard two gunshots. The same witness told detectives that Sampson was the shooter, and a second witness confirmed that account, according to the complaint.

One witness told detectives that Sampson and Nelson had been involved in an ongoing feud.

Nelson was taken by ambulance to Allegheny General Hospital and was pronounced dead. An autopsy later showed that Nelson had sustained two gunshot wounds – one to the chest and one to the groin.
