Gianna Matthews scored 16 points to help host Bishop Canevin claim a 46-37 victory over Monessen Thursday night in a WPIAL Class 1A Section 2 girls basketball matchup.
The win capped off a celebratory night for the Crusaders, who honored their 2012-13 PIAA state championship team and retired jersey No. 21 belonging to standout Erin Waskowiak.
The 2012-13 team captured Bishop Canevin’s one and only PIAA girls basketball title to date, and a number of players from that team were on hand for Thursday night’s festivities.
Bishop Canevin, now 2-2 overall, started out hot, jumping to a 10-3 lead before Monessen came back to within a point by the end of the first quarter.
The game remained tight throughout the middle two quarters, as the Crusaders fell behind by four before Matthews took control.
The Crusaders outscored the Greyhounds 15-8 in the final eight minutes.
Matthews got help from teammates Kya Cooley and Isabella Sysak, each of whom scored 14 points.
Madison Johnson led Monessen with 22 points and Na’Jaziah Carter added 11.
Sto-Rox 55, New Brighton 15
Rae Johnston and Brooklynn Sykes combined for 33 points to lead the host Vikings past the Lions in a Class 3A Section 1 game.
It marked Sto-Rox’s second straight win this week – both by a 55-15 score.
Johnston scored 17 points for Sto-Rox, including 13 in the second quarter when the Vikings outscored the Lions 23-1 to turn a 14-4 first-quarter lead into a 37-5 halftime advantage.
Sykes finished with 16 points for Sto-Rox, which improved to 3-2.
All eight girls who played for Sto-Rox scored at least one point. The Vikings return to action Monday at Quaker Valley.
Montour 54, New Castle 18
The unbeaten Spartans wasted no time getting the upper hand on the host Red Hurricanes, sprinting to a 21-3 first-quarter advantage on the way to an easy Class 5A Section 3 win.
Reese Vojtecky led Montour, which held a 40-6 halftime lead, with 12 points.
The Spartans improved to 5-0 overall with the victory.
Carrick 46, Carlynton 38
Alaysia Peacock scored 17 points and Jocelyn Fisher chipped in 16 as the Raiders took advantage of the Cougars’ subpar free throw shooting to come away with a nonsection win.
Carlynton, which was led by Lucy Vetter’s 16 points, converted just 5 of 20 free throw opportunities in the loss.
“The girls played hard,” Carlynton coach Frank Deutsch said after the game. “But you can’t go 5-for-20 from the line.”
Carlee Hughes added 12 points and Cydney McClendon finished with 10 for Carlynton, which fell to 2-2.
