Girls basketball: Four West Hills teams roll to victories in section openers

A year ago, it took the Sto-Rox girls basketball team 22 games to capture four wins.

This year’s Vikings squad matched that total in just six.

Sto-Rox improved to 4-2 on the season with a 41-11 whipping of host New Brighton Thursday night in a Class 3A Section 1 matchup – the Vikings’ initial section outing of the season.

Kamiyah Thompson led Sto-Rox with 11 points while Rae Johnston and Daniella Reel each contributed 10.

The Vikings bolted to an 11-1 lead after one quarter and extended that lead to 28-4 at halftime. The mercy rule was in effect the final two quarters.

Sto-Rox coach Jeff Stuart emptied his bench in the second quarter but went back to his starters for a spell in the third quarter in preparation for Friday’s game against Carlynton.

“We wanted to work on a few things just to see if we were ready to use them in a game,” said Stuart, whose team beat the Cougars earlier this season. “But we didn’t put on any press or anything – we just played basic defense.”

Sara Daeschner and Claudia Ierullo combined for 21 points and the unbeaten Chargers used a huge third quarter to roll past the Wolverines in a Class 3A Section 1 debut matchup played at Cornell High School.

Daeschner scored 11 points and Ierullo finished with 10 for OLSH, which led 14-5 after one quarter and 21-13 at halftime. The Chargers, now 4-0 overall, then ended all suspense by outscoring the Wolverines 22-2 in the third quarter.

OLSH coach Don Eckerle said his team again relied on a balanced attack, as Leah Parker added nine points, Libby Gallick seven and Lola Garner six to support Daeschner and Ierullo.

Delaney Sturgeon scored eight points in a losing cause for Ellwood City.

Montour 50, New Castle 29

Addyson Kranak led three players in double-figure scoring as the Spartans rolled past the Red Hurricanes in the first Class 5A Section 3 game for both teams.

Kranak scored a team-high 15 points, with 12 of them coming in the second half. Tiffany Miller scored seven of her 13 points in the first half for Montour, which improved to 4-1 overall, and Abby Cleary contributed 10, with eight of those coming in the first half.

The Spartans led 10-5 after one quarter but opened up some daylight with a 16-8 edge in the second quarter that resulted in a 26-13 halftime lead.

Montour coach Jordan Giles liked what she saw of her team.

“The girls really stuck together and played strong on the defensive side,” she said. “They were looking for one another offensively and played really unselfishly.”

Rihanna Boice led New Castle with 18 points.

Bishop Canevin 49, Monessen 26

Kya Cooley scored a career-high 22 points and Alexis Johnson added 10 – also a career-best – as the Crusaders outraced the Greyhounds in a Class 1A Section 2 opener for both teams.

Freshman Elena Chadish added eight big points off the bench for Bishop Canevin, which improved to 4-1 overall. The Crusaders led 25-11 at halftime and never were threatened.

Bishop Canevin coach Rob Travis saluted the play of Vyla Tomachesky, who handled point guard duties in the absence of starting point guard Isabella Sysak.
