Jaedin Griggs and Maria Depner combined for 42 points to propel Moon Area to a 51-43 victory over Mars Monday night in a WPIAL Class 5A Section 3 girls basketball game at Moon.
Griggs hit for 22 points to lead the Tigers, who evened their section record at 2-2 and improved to 6-4 overall.
Depner contributed 20 points for Moon, which jumped to an 18-9 first-quarter lead and owned a 22-17 advantage at halftime.
Moon coach Mark Pompeo said the opening eight minutes were pivotal.
“The team came out very aggressively,” he said. “As a unit, it was our defense that had a big first quarter for us. It allowed us to push and get a lot of nice baskets in transition.”
The two teams battled on even terms through the third quarter, and the Tigers outscored the Fightin’ Planets 15-12 in the final eight minutes to secure the victory.
Adriana D’Alesio added six points for Moon.
Mars dropped to 1-2 in section play and 6-4 overall with the loss.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 50, Riverside 41
Claudia Ierullo led all scorers with 19 points and Lola Garner scored two key fourth-quarter baskets to help the Chargers remain unbeaten in Class 3A Section 1 play with a win over the Panthers.
OLSH improved to 10-2 overall and moved its Section 1 record to 5-0 with the win. Riverside fell to 2-3 in section play and 7-6 overall.
The two teams battled evenly through the first quarter, playing to a 14-14 tie, as Ierullo scored five points for the Chargers, and OLSH led 27-23 at halftime. The Chargers took that four-point lead into the final eight minutes and outscored the Panthers 11-6 to claim the win.
Garner hit back-to-back shots midway through the fourth quarter to help OLSH double its lead from four points to eight points and that proved to be key.
Leah Parker added 12 points for OLSH, with eight of those coming in the third quarter. Gabriella Finch scored 12 points for Riverside and Emma Meyer added 11.
West Allegheny 55, Montour 38
Breana Gubba connected for 17 points and Emma Ruperto added 10 to spark the visiting Indians to a win over the Spartans in a Class 5A Section 3 contest.
West Allegheny led by eight points, 15-7, after the opening quarter and the Indians continued to build on their lead, pushing it to 32-14 over the Spartans at halftime.
Gubba hit five 3-pointers to account for 15 of her 17 points.
Zoe Woessner scored 13 points for Montour, which fell to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in the section.
West Allegheny improved to 8-3 overall and 1-3 in section play.
Postponements
Three games scheduled for Monday night were postponed due to inclement weather – West Green vs. Bishop Canevin, Ellwood City vs. Sto-Rox and Brentwood vs. Carlynton.
Ellwood City will visit Sto-Rox for a 6:30 p.m. game Tuesday, Jan. 7, and Carlynton will host Brentwood at 7 p.m. Tuesday. No makeup date has been set yet for the West Greene-Bishop Canevin game.
