Maria Depner totaled 24 points to help Moon Area open WPIAL Class 5A Section 3 girls basketball play with a 71-21 whipping of visiting New Castle Monday night.
The Tigers, who improved to 3-2 overall, erupted for 31 first-quarter points and led by 21 points going into the second quarter.
Moon added to its lead in the second quarter and led 47-14 at halftime.
Avery Pacheco added nine points for the winners and Samantha D’Alesio finished with eight.
Sofia DeViro led New Castle with 10 points.
Chartiers Valley 36, Montour 34
McKenna Helfrick scored 13 points – including the deciding two — as the Colts handed the Spartans their first loss in six games this season.
Chartiers Valley jumped out to a 15-9 first-quarter lead, and that margin would be crucial in picking up the Class 5A Section 3 win.
The Colts led 24-20 at halftime and 30-28 heading into the final eight minutes. The game wound up tied into the final minute before Helfrick scored on a back-door layup with 10 seconds remaining for the deciding points.
Claire Bannon scored 15 points to lead Montour, now 1-1 in section play, and Tiffany Miller contributed 10.
Beaver Falls 44, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 37
Dreana Haskins scored eight of her 13 points in the second half as the visiting Tigers came back from a seven-point halftime deficit to down the Chargers in a Class 3A Section 1 contest.
OLSH, which fell to 3-1 overall in losing its section opener, led 28-21 at halftime but saw Beaver Falls use a 15-5 edge to take a 36-33 lead heading into the final quarter. There, the Tigers outscored the Chargers 8-4.
OLSH coach Don Eckerle said Beaver Falls’ defensive pressure caused his team some problems. In addition, the Chargers managed to convert just 5 of 13 free throws in the second half.
Jeannette 44, Carlynton 23
The Jayhawks pulled away late to claim a nonsection victory over the Cougars.
Carlynton held its own well into the third quarter, trailing by just three points. But Jeannette took control down the stretch for the win.
Lucy Vetter scored 10 points to lead Carlynton, which fell to 2-3. Navarah Smith and Leah DeFelice each scored 16 points to lead Jeannette, now 7-1.
Serra Catholic 70, Bishop Canevin 38
Bella Dombroski had a big game offensively, scoring 29 points to lead the Eagles past the Crusaders in a Class 1A Section 2 game.
Serra Catholic wasted no time getting untracked, as it raced to a 24-7 lead after one quarter.
Bishop Canevin, now 2-3 overall and 1-1 in section play, played the Eagles evenly in the second quarter but still trailed by 18 points at halftime.
Serra Catholic then removed all doubt by outscoring the Crusaders 19-5 in the third quarter.
Kya Cooley scored 13 points to lead Bishop Canevin and Isabella Sysak added 11.
Abby Genes backed up Dombroski with 12 points and Lexi Pearce added 11.
Quaker Valley 65, Sto-Rox 18
Mimi Thiero poured in 28 points and the Quakers bolted to a 36-2 first-quarter lead on the way to easy win over the Vikings in a Class 3A Section 1 game.
Keira Watson added 16 points for Quaker Valley, which led 54-5 at halftime.
No scoring information was available for Sto-Rox, which fell to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in section play.
