Jaedin Griggs and Maria Depner combined for 12 fourth-quarter points to help lift Moon Area to a 50-42 win over Pine-Richland Saturday in a WPIAL girls non-section basketball contest at Pine-Richland.
Griggs scored a game-high 27 points for Moon, which trailed 33-32 entering the fourth quarter before outscoring the Rams 18-9 in the final eight minutes. Griggs and Depner each contributed six points in the fourth quarter.
Depner finished with eight points in the game for the Class 5A Tigers, who improved to 9-4 overall with the win over the Class 6A Rams.
Jayla Brown contributed seven points and Anya Schwartz chipped in with six for Moon.
Depner converted four free throws and Brown hit two as Pine-Richland put the Tigers on the line for some crucial free throws down the stretch.
Moon coach Mark Pompeo said the game was a back-and-forth affair most of the way.
“Being able to stay composed, and then with Pine-Richland drawing that fifth foul, it lent itself to us being able to come out victorious,” he said. “It was a hard-fought game by our players and as coaches, we are very proud.”
Cate Gentile scored 16 points to pace Pine-Richland, which dropped to 4-11, and Rebekah Shaffer added 11.
Mars 56, Montour 49
Alexis Cashdollar scored seven of her 18 points in the fourth quarter to help the Fightin’ Planets pull away and beat the Spartans in an early-morning Class 5A Section 3 matchup at Mars.
Vita Vargo added 17 points for the Fightin’ Planets, with 13 of those coming in the first half.
The Spartans, who fell to 6-8 overall and 1-5 in section play, played Mars evenly through the first three quarters, and the two teams entered the final eight minutes tied at 43-43.
But Montour managed to score just six fourth-quarter points – four by Tiffany Miller, who finished with 12 points – while Mars hit for 13. Cashdollar converted a key three-point play in the quarter and Mars connected on all five of its free throw attempts in the quarter.
“We gave up a crucial ‘and-1’ that seemed to be turning point, and we couldn’t find the bottom of the net,” Montour coach Jordan Giles said after the game. “We did battle hard, but we need to continue working on finishing the game.”
Abby Cleary scored 19 points to lead Montour and Sofia Brandy added 13, with 11 of those coming in the first half.
Cleary scored 17 of her 19 points in the middle two quarters, but she went scoreless in the fourth quarter.
