Emily Scheller-Gallagher led three players in double figures with 16 points as Our Lady of the Sacred Heart pounded winless New Brighton, 71-12, Thursday night in a WPIAL Class 3A Section 1 girls basketball matchup at Cornell High School.
Scheller-Gallagher connected on four 3-pointers on the night for the Chargers, who remained unbeaten in section play at 6-0 and improved to 11-2 overall.
Claudia Ierullo scored 11 points for OLSH and Rowan Winter added 10.
The Chargers jumped to a 21-4 lead after one quarter and removed all doubt by outscoring New Brighton 18-3 in the second quarter.
No player scored more than four points for the Lions, who fell to 0-6 in the section and 0-9 overall.
Moon Area 53, West Allegheny 48
Jaedin Griggs exploded for 26 points and the Tigers came from behind to beat the Indians in a Class 5A Section 3 game.
Anya Schwartz added nine points for Moon, which led 27-21 at halftime but was outscored 13-6 in the third quarter and trailed 34-33 heading into the final eight minutes.
Moon coach Mark Pompeo said the Tigers gave a total team effort, and that proved to be the difference.
“Defense was a big key the whole game, especially getting stops down the stretch,” he said.
Maria Depner contributed eight points for the Tigers, who improved to 3-2 in section play and 7-4 overall.
Ella Smith and Alexis Santucci each scored 14 points for West Allegheny.
Bishop Canevin 54, Avella 37
Isabella Sysak broke out with 26 points to help the Crusaders cruise past the Eagles in a Class 1A Section 2 game.
Kya Cooley added 13 points for Bishop Canevin, which led 14-6 after one quarter and 25-16 at halftime and then put the game away by outscoring Avella 18-10 in the final eight minutes.
The win boosted the Crusaders’ record to 2-3 in section play and 6-4 overall.
Ava Frank led the Eagles with 20 points.
South Side 74, Carlynton 28
The Rams showed no mercy as they jumped to a 24-4 lead after one quarter and stretched that to 54-13 at halftime by outscoring the Cougars 30-9 in the second quarter.
Carlee Hughes scored 12 points to lead Carlynton, which dropped to 1-2 in Class 2A Section 2 action and 5-6 overall. Lucy Vetter added seven points for the Cougars.
