Rae Johnston finished with17 points and Kamiyah Thompson scored five of her 10 points in the pivotal fourth quarter to help Sto-Rox to a 43-39 win over Springdale Saturday in the second day of the Deer Lakes girls basketball tournament.
The victory evens the Vikings’ record at 1-1 going into Tuesday’s game at Carlynton.
Johnston scored 10 of her 17 points in the first half, as Sto-Rox battled the Dynamos to an 18-18 stalemate at intermission.
Springdale took a 30-28 lead into the final quarter before the Vikings erupted for 15 fourth-quarter points to win by four.
Brooklyn Sykes added 10 points in the win for Sto-Rox.
Ashlyn Ferderbar led Springdale with 15 points.
Sto-Rox’s performance was in stark contrast to the effort in Friday night’s tournament opener, particularly in the second half, when host Deer Lakes outscored the Vikings 30-12 on the way to a 39-18 win.
“We played fabulous defense in the first half,” Sto-Rox coach Jeff Stuart said of his team’s effort Friday night. “But we died out in the second half – we weren’t challenging anyone and they started dropping buckets.”
