BOYS: Greater Latrobe 62, Moon Area 53
The Wildcats went on a 10-2 run in the final two minutes to pull away and beat the host Tigers in the consolation bracket of the WPIAL Class 5A Boys Tournament.
The loss dropped the fifth-seeded Tigers to 18-7 while Latrobe, seeded No. 9, improved to 20-5.
Moon will next take on Penn-Trafford, an 86-73 loser to Uniontown Monday night, in the battle for seventh place Wednesday at Moon. The game time hasn’t yet been determined.
Moon coach Gino Palmosina said his team simply wasn’t ready to play Monday. “Which is on me,” he added.
Moon trailed by as many as 10 points early in the game, 30-20, but scored seven straight points to end the second quarter and Latrobe held a 30-27 lead at halftime.
The Tigers pulled to win two, 38-36, with 2 minutes, 35 seconds remaining in the third quarter when Amir Turner, who led the Tigers with 19 points, drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key.
But Latrobe regrouped and widened its lead to 45-40 heading into the final eight minutes.
Moon would not go away, and when Turner scored on a driving layup with 2:15 to play in the game, the Tigers trailed just 52-51.
Latrobe led 56-53 but Moon had a chance to tie it when Michael Santicola misfired on a 3-point attempt from the corner with 58 seconds remaining.
Latrobe missed a shot inside on the ensuing trip down the floor, but the Wildcats were able to corral the offensive rebound and Max Butler converted a pair of free throws to make it 58-53 with 38.8 seconds left.
After Turner missed on a driving layup attempt, the Wildcats converted on the other end on Ian DeCerb’s layup, and that put the game away at 60-53.
Free throws proved to be a major factor in the game, as the Wildcats converted 14 of 16 from the line and hit all 10 of their attempts in the fourth quarter.
Moon, meanwhile, went to the line just nine times all night and only converted four.
Santicola, who shot in tough luck all night, added 17 points for the Tigers.
Latrobe had four players score in double figures, led by John Wetzel’s 15 points. Dom Scarton added 14, Butler 13 and DeCerb 10.
