Marcus Griffin scored eight of his 15 points in the second period to help the Sto-Rox boys basketball team pull away and claim a 67-40 victory over Northgate Tuesday in the Montour Tournament.
The victory gave the Vikings a split in the tournament and left them with an overall record of 4-4.
Sto-Rox led 18-14 after one quarter but turned it up a notch in quarter No. 2, outscoring the Flames 23-7 to take a 41-21 halftime lead.
The Vikings matched that output in the third quarter to end any hopes of a Northgate comeback.
L.J. Washington led Sto-Rox with 17 points while M.J. Thomas added 11 and Adam Thomas finished with 10.
Moon Area 78, Mervo Tech 42
Once again the Tigers got off to a hot start and this time kept it going en route to a win over Mergenthaler Vocational of Baltimore at the Governor’s Challenge tournament in Salisbury, Md.
Moon, now 7-2, jumped out to a 20-11 lead after the first quarter before turning up the defensive pressure in the second. Moon held Mervo to 15 points and put up 25 in the period, extending its lead to 45-26 at halftime.
Any hopes of a Mervo rally were put to rest after the break, as Moon outscored the Mustangs 21-11 in the third quarter.
Braeden Stuart led the Tigers with 17 points, followed by Jackson Bauman with 15, AJ Buford with 12 and Caiden Kopay with 11.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 59, Washington 39
Austin Avsec scored eight of his 13 points in a pivotal second quarter as the Chargers took command at that point on the way to beating the Little Prexies in the Monessen Holiday Tournament.
OLSH, now 6-4, led 9-6 after one quarter but outscored Washington 21-12 in the second quarter to lead 31-18 at halftime.
The Chargers continued to widen the gap in the third quarter, as Jake Johnson fueled a 15-6 advantage with seven of his 13 points, and that sealed the deal.
Tiernan McCullough finished with 14 points for OLSH. Tristan Reed led Washington with 14 points.
Bishop Canevin 83, Eden Christian Academy 55
Drew Allen had his second straight big scoring night, pouring in 25 points to help the Crusaders breeze past the host Warriors in a nonsection game.
Allen, who scored 27 points in Bishop Canevin’s loss to Jeannette Monday night, tallied 16 of his points in the first half when the Crusaders built a 44-32 lead.
Jackson Maddix and Lamier Wade each added 18 points for Bishop Canevin, which improved to 5-7.
Shaler 62, Montour 50
Deron Nixon and Jordan Epps combined for 44 points to spark the Titans past the Spartans in the second and final day of the Montour Tournament.
Nixon scored half of his 24 points in the opening quarter to help Shaler bolt to a 24-13 lead.
Montour, led by Mark Carter’s 22 points, closed the gap a bit in the second quarter and trailed 34-27 at halftime.
The Titans then outscored the Spartans 19-8 in the third quarter, with Epps scoring nine of his 20 points.
Brandon Bennett added 11 points for Montour, which fell to 3-7 overall.
South Side 78, Cornell 32
Andrew Corfield totaled 23 points and the Rams used a huge first quarter to take control in their win over the Raiders in the South Side Tournament.
Austin Leatherman added 18 points for South Side, which led 26-6 after one quarter and 42-19 at halftime.
Logan Leatherman contributed 10 points for the winners. Zy’Air Dupree scored 14 points for Cornell, which fell to 3-9 with the loss.
Charleroi 64, Carlynton 57
Xavion Thomas led four players in double figures with 17 points as tournament host Charleroi prevailed in a battle of two Cougars squads.
Carlynton, which fell to 3-8 overall, got off to a smoking hot start, scoring 29 points and led by eight going into the second quarter. But the visiting Cougars managed just 28 points in the last three quarters combined.
Mikey Jenkins scored 12 of his 14 points in Carlynton’s 29-point first quarter. Maurice Segnonou led the Cougars with 19 points, nine of which came in the opening quarter, and DeWayne Fisher added 10.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Montour 50, Riverside 31
The Spartans won their second straight game at the Deep Creek Holiday Classic in Deep Creek, Md., using a big first half to improve to 9-2 on the season.
Tiffany Miller led Montour with 13 points. The Spartans led by 10 after one quarter and then widened their advantage to 31-16 at halftime to take complete control.
Butler 47, Moon Area 44
The host Golden Tornado saved their best for last, outscoring the Tigers 16-9 in the final quarter to claim a come-from-behind victory in the Butler Tournament.
Eva Stutz led Butler with 18 points and Emily Hoffer added 16 for the winners, who led 20-18 at halftime but watched the Tigers use a 17-11 third-quarter advantage to take a 35-31 lead heading into the final eight minutes.
Moon’s Maria Depner led all scorers with 26 points but it wasn’t enough to keep the Tigers from falling to 4-6 overall.
Fox Chapel 69, Bishop Canevin 35
Lyla Jablon scored a game-high 20 points to lift the Foxes past the Crusaders in the consolation game of the St. Joseph’s Tournament.
Bishop Canevin was hurt by missed layups and turnovers in falling to 3-6 on the season.
Kya Cooley paced the Crusaders with 15 points and Isabella Sysak chipped in 10.
California 62, Carlynton 32
Lucy Vetter scored 11 points for the Cougars, but it wasn’t nearly enough as they fell to the Trojans in the Mapletown Tournament.
Carlee Hughes added eight points for Carlynton, which dropped to 3-6 with the loss.
