High school basketball: Holiday tournaments keep West Hills schools plenty busy

The Moon Area boys basketball team used a hot start and a balanced attack to hold off Largo (Md.), 72-66, Monday in the opening day of the Governor’s Challenge tournament at Salisbury, Md.

Moon, led by Jackson Bauman’s 15 points, jumped to a 25-15 lead in the opening quarter, and that proved to be crucial as the Lions outscored the Tigers every quarter from that point on.

Largo slowed the pace in the second quarter and cut the margin to 39-32 at halftime.

The Lions continued to apply pressure in the third quarter and sliced the lead to 55-49 heading into the final quarter.

Moon answered in the last eight minutes with several timely baskets and solid execution down the stretch.

Braeden Stuart added 14 points, AJ Buford contributed 13 and Caden Kopay chipped in 10 for Moon, which improved to 6-2 overall.

Tobi Echebi led Largo with 20 points while Jalen Johnson added 14 and Deshae Turner 13.

The Tigers return to action at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday against Mervo (Md.).


Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 59, Monessen 25

Jake Johnson led three players in double figures with 15 points and the Chargers took control in the middle two quarters to pound the host Greyhounds in the Monessen Holiday Tournament..

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for OLSH, which improved to 5-4 overall.

The Chargers led 14-9 after one quarter but widened their lead to 31-17 at halftime. Frankie Igrec scored nine of his 12 points in the second quarter. OLSH removed all doubt by outscoring Monessen 19-4 in the third quarter.

Tiernan McCullough contributed 10 points for the winners. Terrence Taylor scored eight points to lead Monessen.


Brownsville 66, Carlynton 62

Jaiden Praster scored seven of his game-high 20 points in the final eight minutes, leading the Falcons past the Cougars at the Charleroi Tournament.

Caden Wimmer added 18 points for the winners, who jumped to a 24-11 first-quarter lead but watched Carlynton outscore them 35-22 in the middle two quarters to forge a 46-46 tie heading into the final eight minutes.

DeWayne Fisher led Carlynton with 14 points and scored six of them in the third quarter as the Cougars used a 21-9 edge to pull even.

But Praster helped the Falcons regain the lead in the final quarter and hold on to win.

Isaac Anker added 13 points for Carlynton, now 3-7 overall, and Maurice Segnonou finished with 10, with the two combining for 16 second-half points.


Jeannette 67, Bishop Canevin 52

Markus McGowan scored 21 points and Kymon’e Brown contributed eight of his 15 in the final quarter as the Jayhawks downed the Crusaders in the Holiday Bash at North Allegheny.

Jeannette led 19-11 after one quarter but Bishop Canevin pulled to within four points – 32-28 – at halftime.

Bishop Canevin remained within striking distance in the third quarter, trailing by just six heading into the final eight minutes before the Jayhawks erupted for 25 points to 16 for the Crusaders.

Drew Allen scored 27 points to lead Bishop Canevin, which dropped to 4-7.


Western Beaver 59, Cornell 30

Khai Hudson scored 15 points as the Golden Beavers built a 16-point halftime lead and held on to down the Raiders at the South Side Tournament.

The win was Western Beaver’s first of the season in eight tries while Cornell fell to 3-8 overall.

Luke Griesser added 14 points and Carter Marshall finished with 13 for Western Beaver.

Terrance Collington scored 14 points to pace Cornell, which had to compete without five of its players.


Montour 43, Northgate 18

Sal Magliocco led all scorers with 14 points and Rob Schmitt contributed 13 as the Spartans downed the Flames at the Montour Tournament.

Montour turned a five-point first-quarter lead to a 19-point advantage by outscoring Northgate 16-2 in the second quarter.

Magliocco scored seven of his 14 points in the second quarter. Schmidt hit a pair of 3-pointers in the third quarter as Montour continued adding to its lead.


Shaler 71, Sto-Rox 40

Jordan Epps totaled 20 points and the Titans used a big first half to open up an insurmountable lead and beat the Vikings in the Montour Tournament.

Epps scored 12 of his 20 in the first quarter as Shaler got out to a 20-8 lead. The Titans then hit for 26 in the second quarter and led 46-18 at halftime.

Zach London added 12 points for Shaler. L.J. Washington’s 16 points were high for Sto-Rox, which dropped to 3-4.


GIRLS BASKETBALL

Montour 65, Mountain Ridge 42

Tiffany Miller led three players in double figures with 19 points as the Spartans topped the Miners at the Deep Creek Holiday Classic in Deep Creek, Md.

Montour used a hot first-quarter, outscoring the Frostburg, Md., squad 19-6, and then widened its lead to 35-11 at halftime.

Zoe Woessner contributed 18 points for the Spartans and Sofia Brandy added 13 as Montour improved to 8-2 on the season. The Spartans will play a second tournament game at noon Tuesday against Riverside High School

Carolyn Hughes led Mountain Ridge with nine points.


Moon Area 50, Armstrong 27

Maria Depner scored a game-high 17 points as the Tigers cruised to a victory over the River Hawks in the Butler Christmas Tournament.

Moon outscored Armstrong 12-2 in the opening quarter and built a 26-13 halftime lead. The Tigers, now 4-5 overall, kept up the pressure in the second half, outscoring the River Hawks 24-14.

Madi Wilson added 12 points for Moon and Avery Pacheco contributed 10.


Carlynton 42, Mapletown 33

Lucy Vetter paced the Cougars with 18 points as they started strong and then withstood a comeback by the host Maples in the Mapletown Tournament.

Carlynton sped to an 18-9 first-quarter lead and increased it to 30-11 at halftime and then 37-17 after three quarters. But the Maples erupted for 16 fourth-quarter points to cut into that lead.

Carlee Hughes added 11 points for Carlynton, which improved to 3-5 with the win. The Cougars also got seven key points from Ashley Mulligan and six from Nia McGinnis to help build that big first-half lead.


Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 73, Brownsville 17

Rowan Winter led four players in double figures with 16 points as the Chargers rolled past the Falcons in the CalU Tournament.

Lola Garner added 12 points, Shae Trombetta chipped in 11 and Leah Parker finished with 10 for OLSH, which improved to 8-2 with the win. The Chargers led 23-8 after one quarter and 38-12 at halftime.

Ava Clark scored 11 points to lead Brownsville.


St. Joseph 52, Bishop Canevin 24

Bella Bartolovic led all scorers with 19 points and the Spartans used a big first quarter to take control on the way to a win over the Crusaders.

St. Joseph outscored Bishop Canevin 23-4 in the first quarter and continued to add to the lead in the second quarter. The Spartans went into the halftime break leading 41-12.

Kasey Cienik added 12 points for the winners. Isabella Sysak’s 14 points led Bishop Canevin, which fell to 3-5 overall.
