Maurice Segnonou and Ishaga Barrie teamed to score 25 points to propel host Carlynton to a 47-35 victory over Cornell Friday night in the opening round of the Carlynton Cougars Boys and Girls Tip-Off Classic.
Carlynton led by just three points – 16-13 – at the end of one quarter and the Cougars added to their lead by scoring 10 points to the Raiders’ 7 in the second quarter.
The Cougars led 37-29 heading into the final eight minutes and remained in command to pick up the win.
Segnonou finished with 12 points and Barrie had 11 for Carlynton, which will take on East Allegheny at 7 p.m. Saturday in the boys tournament championship game.
Eduardo Benitez scored 24 of the Raiders’ 35 points. Cornell, which fell to 0-2, will meet Charleroi at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the boys tournament consolation game.
Moon Area 43, Penn Hills 38
Jackson Bauman netted a game-high 16 points to spark the Tigers past the Indians in the Central Catholic Tip-Off Tournament.
Moon, now 2-0, led 13-6 after one quarter and 24-16 at halftime and then went on to the victory.
AJ Buford added 10 points for the winners, who will play host Central Catholic at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 56, Albert Gallatin 25
Jake Johnson and Nolan Reed teamed to score 33 points and the Chargers had no trouble taking care of the Colonials in the opening game of the Brownsville Tip-Off Tournament.
Johnson scored six of his team-high 19 points in the first quarter to help OLSH take a 15-2 lead, and that lead grew to 24-9 at halftime. The Chargers, now 2-0, continued to build on their margin, outscoring the Colonials 17-5 in the third quarter to put the game away.
Reed finished with 14 points for OLSH, with seven of them coming in the third quarter.
Darrin Ford was Albert Gallatin’s high scorer with 25 points.
Seneca Valley 54, Montour 44
Andrew Omasits led three players in double figures as the Raiders downed the Spartans in a non-section game at Seneca Valley.
Ryan Priester added 11 points and Owen Congdon chipped in 10 for the Raiders, who led 16-7 after one quarter and 28-21 at halftime before widening their margin to 39-26 heading into the final eight minutes.
Brandon Bennett scored 15 points to lead Montour, which fell to 0-2.
Seton LaSalle 74, Sto-Rox 47
Jaleel Wright led a balanced attack with 13 points as the visiting Rebels sped past the Vikings in Sto-Rox’s season opener.
Seton LaSalle jumped to a 19-8 first quarter lead and owned a 38-23 advantage at halftime. The Rebels put the game away by outscoring the Vikings 22-10 in the third quarter.
Will Martin and Noah Kouparis each scored 11 points for Seton LaSalle.
No individual scoring details were available for Sto-Rox.
GIRLS
Carlynton Tip-Off Classic
Carlynton 33, East Allegheny 22
Lucy Vetter tallied 21 of the Cougars’ 33 points to lead them past the Wildcats in Carlynton’s season opener.
The win vaults the Cougars into Saturday’s 5 p.m. girls tournament title game against Propel Braddock Hills, which defeated Shenango Friday night.
Carlynton bolted to a 14-0 first-quarter lead, with Vetter scoring 10 points. The Cougars led 16-8 at halftime and 26-18 heading into the final quarter.
Carlee Hughes added 10 points for the Cougars. Ivyonna Barrett scored 14 points to lead East Allegheny.
Moon Area Tip-Off Tournament
Canon-McMillan 49, Moon Area 39
Lauren Borella scored 14 points and Brooke Stanton added 11 for the Big Macs, who led 24-17 at halftime and then used a 13-2 third-quarter advantage to take control.
Maria Depner scored 10 points to lead Moon, which dropped to 1-1 on the season.
The Tigers take on Hopewell at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the second day of the tournament.
