High school basketball: Montour, OLSH boys win; Bishop Canevin, OLSH girls roll

Mark Carter led four players in double figures with 21 points, sparking Montour to a 56-42 victory over Mars Monday night in a WPIAL Class 5A Section 4 boys basketball game at Mars.

The surging Spartans moved to 5-6 in section play and 8-12 overall with their fifth win in their last six games. Montour remains in the hunt for a WPIAL playoff spot with one section game remaining, Friday at home against Moon.

Mars, which is 5-5, finishes its section schedule against Lincoln Park and Chartiers Valley, the top two teams in the section. If Montour and Mars wind up tied for fourth place in the section, both would advance to the WPIAL playoffs.

The Spartans and Fightin’ Planets were deadlocked 19-19 at halftime Monday night but the Spartans took control in the second half, outscoring the host team 37-23.

Montour, which also got 13 points from Zane Schachter, used a 15-9 advantage in the third quarter to take a 34-28 lead into the final quarter, then used a 22-14 edge in the last eight minutes to win going away.

Robert Schmitt and Loic Kalau each added 10 points for Montour.

Ethan Kresinski scored 10 points to lead Mars.


Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 67, Western Beaver 25

Jake Johnson scored 13 of his game-high 19 points in the first quarter as the Chargers exploded for 28 points in the first eight minutes and cruised past the Golden Beavers in a Class 2A Section 4 contest.

OLSH, now 16-4 overall and 11-1 in the section, led 44-16 at halftime and blanked Western Beaver 15-0 in the third quarter.

Tiernan McCullough added 11 points for OLSH, which saw 11 players score at least two points.


GIRLS BASKETBALL

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 55, New Brighton 5

Lola Garner scored 13 points to lead the Chargers past the Lions in a Class 3A Section 1 contest.

OLSH, 15-5 overall and 9-4 in section play, led 12-1 after one quarter and 23-3 at halftime, then outscored the Lions 18-1 in the third quarter.


Bishop Canevin 54, Avella 21

The Crusaders built a 13-point halftime lead and then put the game away by outscoring the Eagles 19-4 in the third quarter to even their Class 1A Section 2 record at 6-6.

Isabella Sysak hit for 25 points to lead Bishop Canevin, which improved to 7-11 overall.

Kya Cooley added 13 points and Vyla Tomachesky contributed 10 for the Crusaders, who displayed a smothering defense in picking up the win.


Riverside 60, Sto-Rox 17

Emma Meyer’s 26 points sparked the Panthers past the Vikings in a Class 3A Section 1 game at Riverside.

The Vikings, who fell to 8-10 overall and 5-8 in section play, trailed by just three points, 9-6, after one quarter. But Riverside outscored Sto-Rox 17-3 in the second quarter and 22-6 in the third quarter to put the game away.

Addison Drake added 10 points for the Panthers.


South Side Beaver 43, Carlynton 24

The visiting Cougars trailed just 18-14 at halftime but couldn’t stay with the Rams during the final two quarters and fell in a Class 2A Section 2 game.

Lucy Vetter and Carlee Hughes each scored eight points to lead Carlynton, which dropped to 5-16 overall and 0-7 in section play.


West Allegheny 59, Moon Area 41

Maria Depner scored a game-high 20 points for the Tigers, but that wasn’t nearly enough as they fell to the Indians in a Class 5A Section 3 game at West Allegheny.

Bre Gubba led four West Allegheny players in double figures with 14 points. The Indians led 18-11 after one quarter and then outscored Moon 30-16 in the middle two quarters to take command.

Emma Ruperto and Sky Gubba each scored 13 points for West Allegheny and Ella Smith finished with 12.

Moon fell to 7-13 overall and 2-9 in the section.
