A 10-1 run midway through the fourth quarter gave the Moon Area boys basketball team the cushion it needed to down Taylor Allderdice, 51-47, Saturday at The Challenge at Alderdice.
The Tigers, now 10-2 overall and ranked No. 4 among Class 5A teams by the Post-Gazette, trailed 40-39 three minutes into the final quarter before Caleb Waclawski scored on consecutive trips down the floor to give his team a 43-40 lead.
After an Allderdice free throw made it 43-41, Jackson Bauman drained a 3-pointer and then converted a pair of free throws with 3 minutes, 16 seconds to play to give Moon a 48-41 lead.
From that point on, however, the Tigers had major issues at the free-throw line, which allowed the Dragons to get back into the game.
Moon missed five of its next six free-throw attempts, and an Allderdice basket with 27.2 seconds remaining cut the Tigers’ lead to 49-45.
Bauman’s free throw made it 50-45 with 24 seconds left, and another Allderdice basket sliced it to 50-47 with 9 seconds to play. The Tigers then missed two more free throws one second later, but Moon’s AJ Bufford corralled the rebound off the second miss, and Bauman converted one of two free throw attempts with 2.3 seconds to play to increase Moon’s lead to 51-47, and that proved to be enough for the win.
