High school basketball: OLSH boys win; girls fall to West Allegheny

Austin Avsec led four players in double-figure scoring with 17 points and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart used a quick start to take control en route to a 64-54 win over Hopewell Saturday in the Mahoney Classic at Burgettstown High School.

The Chargers, who improved to 7-3 overall, jumped to a 25-14 lead after one quarter, as Jake Johnson scored eight of his 11 points in the quarter and Avsec contributed six.

OLSH led 33-25 at halftime and outscored Hopewell 19-8 in the third quarter to put the game away.

Tiernan McCullough led the third-quarter surge with nine points; he finished with 15 overall for OLSH.

Vann Kavals contributed 14 points for the winners.

James Armstrong scored 17 points to lead Hopewell and Zack Covell added 14 for the Vikings.

GIRLS: West Allegheny 61, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 53

Emma Ruperto scored 15 points and Ella Smith added 13 to lead the Indians past the Chargers.

West Allegheny used a 16-8 second-quarter advantage to pull away from a 12-12 first-quarter tie, and after OLSH pulled to within 42-39 heading into the final quarter, the Indians held on for the win.

Claudia Ierullo scored 25 points to lead the Chargers, who fell to 9-2 overall, and Leah Parker added 14.
