Our Lady of the Sacred Heart’s boys basketball team used a balanced attack and a huge third quarter to hand Neshannock its first loss in WPIAL Class 2A Section 4 play this season with a 60-43 victory at OLSH’s Angela Activities Center.
Tiernan McCullough and Jake Johnson each scored 16 points, with Johnson contributing half of those points during the Chargers’ 20-4 third-quarter advantage. That erased a 24-22 halftime deficit and gave OLSH a 42-28 lead heading into the final quarter.
Austin Avsec contributed 15 points for the winners while Nolan Reed chipped in with nine.
Dave Kwiat’s 22 points led Neshannock, with 11 of those coming in the fourth quarter.
With the win, OLSH improved to 11-4 overall and 6-1 in section play, pulling to within a game of first-place Neshannock, which fell to 9-3 overall and 7-1 in section play.
Avonworth 63, Bishop Canevin 55 (OT)
Sophomore Will Shields scored 17 points and the Antelopes outscored the Crusaders 9-1 in overtime to claim a nonsection victory.
Drew Allen scored 17 points to pace Bishop Canevin, which led 39-37 heading into the final quarter only to see Avonworth tie the game in regulation and force it to overtime.
Carson Bellinger added 12 points for the Antelopes. Raukeem Hawkins chipped in 15 points for Bishop Canevin, which fell to 9-7 overall, and Jackson Maddix contributed 10.
Lincoln Park 58, Montour 55
Columbia commit Josh Pratt scored a game-high 30 points to help the Leopards hold off the Spartans in a Class 5A Section 4 game at Montour.
Montour trailed by 10 points at halftime, 37-27, but narrowed the deficit to 51-50 with 3 minutes left to play in the game.
The Spartans remained within striking distance down to the wire but misfired on a 3-point attempt at the buzzer that would have tied the game.
Mark Carter led Montour with 23 points and Zane Schacter, playing his first game after missing the previous nine games with a fractured wrist, contributed 13 points.
The Spartans fell to 4-11 overall and 2-5 in section play.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Carlynton 38, Jefferson-Morgan 26
Lucy Vetter’s 18 points led the Cougars to a nonsection victory over the Rockets.
Carlynton, which improved to 5-9 overall, led 11-0 after one quarter and 16-2 at halftime. Jefferson-Morgan played the Cougars on more even terms in the final two quarters, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.
Ava Wood led Jefferson-Morgan with 13 points.
