High school basketball: OLSH girls, boys roll to easy victories; Sto-Rox girls blitzed

Shae Trombetta led three players in double figures with a season-high 17 points and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart wasted no time in taking control in a 71-38 victory over Beaver Falls Monday night in a WPIAL Class 3A Section 1 girls basketball game.

The win enabled OLSH to remain unbeaten in section play at 9-0, and the Chargers improved to 14-2 overall.

Claudia Ierullo and Lola Garner each scored 10 points for the winners, who jumped to a 23-5 first-quarter lead over the Tigers.

Trombetta and Libby Gallick both came off the bench to score seven points apiece in that opening quarter.

Beaver Falls got its bearings in the second quarter, outscoring OLSH 19-18 but the Chargers erased all doubt in the third quarter by outscoring the Tigers 20-7.

Taylor Pullen scored 27 points to lead Beaver Falls.


Moon Area 48, New Castle 29

Jaedin Griggs single-handedly outscored the Red Hurricanes, tallying 30 points to lead the Tigers to a Class 5A Section 3 victory at New Castle.

Jayla Brown added seven points for Moon, which led 19-8 after one quarter and 31-11 at halftime and never was threatened thereafter.

The win boosted Moon’s overall record to 10-4 and left the Tigers 5-2 in section play.


Chartiers Valley 59, Montour 39

Ava Shazer scored 19 points and the Colts exploded for 29 second-quarter points to take charge in a Class 5A Section 3 win over the Spartans.

Montour got off to a hot start and led 15-9 after one quarter. But Chartiers Valley outscored the Spartans 29-4 in the second quarter and that was the difference in the game.

“We had too many turnovers and empty possessions during the second quarter, which really hurt us,” Montour coach Jordan Giles said after the game.

Shazer scored 10 of her 19 points in the second quarter, and six other players scored at least two points for the Colts in that quarter.

Rachel Boehm added 13 points for Chartiers Valley. Zoe Wessner scored 11 points to lead Montour, which fell to 6-9 overall and 1-6 in section play.


Serra Catholic 54, Bishop Canevin 33

Bella Dumbroski scored 25 points and the Eagles used a big second quarter to establish control in a Class 1A Section 2 victory over the Crusaders.

Bishop Canevin trailed by just five, 19-14, after one quarter, but Serra Catholic outscored the Crusaders 18-7 in the second quarter to build a 37-21 lead at halftime, and Bishop Canevin never threatened thereafter.

Crusaders coach Rob Travis said it just wasn’t his team’s night.

“We competed for about a quarter and a half and then we went flat,” he said. “Give credit to Serra Catholic for making adjustments from the first meeting of the year.”

The Eagles won that game, 52-50, with Dumbroski – the 5-foot-9 freshman guard – scoring 32 points.

The Crusaders, who dropped to 3-4 in section play and 8-5 overall, also committed 20 turnovers in Monday night’s game and converted just 4 of 14 free throw attempts.


Quaker Valley 68, Sto-Rox 19

Mimi Thiero poured in 29 points and reached the 1,000-point mark for her career as Quakers rolled past the Vikings in a Class 3A Section 1 game at Sto-Rox.

Quaker Valley, which also got 12 points from Leasia Karto, led 16-7 after one quarter but then used a 21-3 edge in the second quarter to build a 37-10 halftime lead.

The Quakers held the Vikings scoreless in the third quarter while scoring 17 points of their own to increase their lead to 54-10 heading into the final eight minutes.

The loss dropped Sto-Rox to 6-9 overall and 1-7 in the section while Quaker Valley improved to 8-7 and 6-3.


BOYS: Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 72, Western Beaver 30

Tiernan McCullough scored nine of his 16 points in the first quarter to help the Chargers get off to a fast start on the way to an easy win over the Golden Beavers in a Class 2A Section 4 matchup at Cornell High School.

Jake Johnson added seven points in the opening quarter as OLSH sped to a 22-9 lead and that margin only grew in the second quarter as the Chargers outscored Western Beaver 21-11 to take a 43-20 lead at halftime.

Austin Avsec contributed 11 points for OLSH, which improved to 7-1 in the section and 12-3 overall.

Johnson and Tommy Moses each finished with nine points for the Chargers. Nate Schwarz led Western Beaver with 11 points.


Beaver 93, Sto-Rox 48

Brady Mayo hit for 35 points and the Bobcats rolled to an easy win over the Vikings in a non-section game.

Beaver jumped to a 24-11 lead in the opening quarter and extended that to 46-14 at halftime. The Bobcats then exploded for 34 points in the third quarter to secure the win.

Nick Krzeczowski scored 19 points and Junior Marino added 16 for Beaver. Marcus Griffin scored 20 points to lead the Vikings, who fell to 2-11 overall. Javon Nelson added 13 points in the loss.
