One night after notching his 400th career victory as coach of the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart girls basketball team, Don Eckerle watched his Chargers squad lose for the first time this season Monday night.
OLSH fell 40-30 to Greensburg Central Catholic in the California University of Pennsylvania Tournament. The loss dropped the Chargers to 8-1 on the season.
OLSH trailed 8-6 after one quarter and 20-11 at halftime. The Centurions, which got 12 points from Jayla Peterson and 11 from Erica Gribble, widened their lead to 30-19 heading into the final quarter.
Claudia Ierullo led OLSH with 15 points, with 13 of those coming in the second half.
Eckerle said defense was the order of the day, as both teams were kept well below their scoring averages.
OLSH had to come from behind Sunday in a 54-44 victory over Taylor Allderdice, the win that gave Eckerle his milestone. But the Chargers weren’t able to keep their season-long winning streak intact Monday.
In Sunday’s game, OLSH trailed by six points midway through the third quarter when the Chargers created several steals that enabled them to come back and take the lead at the end of the quarter, 40-39.
Eckerle said his team played excellent defense in the fourth quarter, limiting Allderdice to two field goals.
Leah Parker scored 16 points to lead OLSH while Ierullo, who missed half of the first half due to foul trouble, added nine points.
