South Fayette 63, Moon 39

Haylie Lamonde scored 21 points and the Lions used several big runs to overwhelm the Tigers in a Class 5A Section 3 matchup at South Fayette.

Moon played South Fayette evenly through the first eight minutes, as the game went into the second quarter tied 11-11. But the Lions used a 9-0 run to build a 20-11 advantage two minutes into the quarter and settled for a 25-19 lead at halftime.

South Fayette went on another run – this one even longer and more productive – at the start the third quarter, reeling off 13 straight points in the first 5½ minutes to widen its lead to 38-19.

Jaedin Griggs, who led Moon with 22 points, finally stopped the bleeding when she banked in a shot from beyond the top of the key to cut the margin to 38-22. But South Fayette took a 48-25 lead into the final quarter and was never threatened.

Clairton 52, Bishop Canevin 43

The Crusaders “held” high-scoring Iyanna Wade to 27 points – more than 15 points below her season average — but that proved to be enough to lift the visiting Bears to a win in a Class 1A Section 2 battle.

Bishop Canevin came out red-hot, outscoring Clairton 15-4 in the first eight minutes. The Crusaders limited Wade to just 10 points in the first two quarters and owned a 27-20 halftime lead.

But Wade, who had back-to-back 50-point games last month, came alive in the final two quarters, netting 17 points in 16 minutes despite playing with four fouls for the last 10 minutes. The Bears used a 17-9 edge in the third quarter to take a 37-36 lead into the final quarter and secured the win.

Bishop Canevin scored just 16 points in the second half and committed 19 turnovers for the game.

Kya Cooley scored 17 points to lead Bishop Canevin, which fell to 5-4 overall and 1-3 in the section with the loss. Isabella Sysak contributed 11 points in the loss.
