High school basketball: OLSH, Montour, Bishop Canevin girls claim wins; Montour, OLSH boys fall

Lola Garner led a balanced attack with 12 points as Our Lady of the Sacred Heart rolled to a 52-17 victory over Sto-Rox Monday night in a WPIAL Class 3A Section 1 girls basketball game played at OLSH’s Angela Activities Center.

The Chargers took control early, outscoring the Vikings 19-4 in the first quarter and they cruised to the win.

OLSH, 5-2 overall and 2-2 in section play, continued to build upon its lead in quarter No. 2, opening up a 40-7 halftime advantage, and the Chargers entered the final quarter with a 43-12 lead.

Backing up Garner’s 12 points for OLSH were Ashlyn Johnson, Shae Trombetta and Rowan Winter, who each added 10.

Kamiyah Thompson scored seven points for Sto-Rox, which dropped to 4-4 overall and 1-3 in section play.

Montour 43, Mars 33

Tiffany Miller and Claire Bannon combined for 37 points as the Spartans continued their strong start with a Class 5A Section 3 win over the visiting Fightin’ Planets.

Miller finished with 22 points and Bannon added 15 for Montour, which improved to 7-2 overall and 2-2 in section play.

The Spartans trailed 15-8 after one quarter but outscored Mars 14-6 in the second quarter to take a 22-21 halftime lead. Montour then used a 21-12 advantage in the final two quarters to nail down the win.

Alexis Cashdollar led Mars with 19 points.


Bishop Canevin 35, Clairton 25

Isabella Sysak scored 12 points and the Crusaders battled through some foul trouble to post a win in a Class 1A Section 2 contest.

Kya Cooley scored seven points and Vyla Tomachesky added six for Bishop Canevin, which improved to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the section.

The Crusaders led 13-5 after one quarter before Clairton narrowed the game to 20-17 at halftime. But Bishop Canevin outscored the Bears 15-8 in the final two quarters to secure the win.

Karma Fuqua led Clairton with 15.


South Fayette 63, Moon Area 29

The defending state champion Lions built a 19-point halftime lead on the way to a Class 5A Section 3 victory over the host Tigers.

Juliette Leroux scored 20 points to lead South Fayette, which had three other players in double figures – Ryan Oldacker totaled 13 and Ella Vierra and Haylie Lamonde each scored 11.

South Fayette led 17-4 six minutes into the first quarter and after the Tigers cut that lead to six at the end of the quarter at 17-10, the Lions turned things up a notch and increased their lead to 35-16 at halftime.

Moon, led by Maria Depner’s 15 points, fell to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in section play.


BOYS BASKETBALL

Mars 59, Montour 44

Austen Wroblewski scored a game-high 24 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, to help the Fightin’ Planets down the Spartans in a Class 5A Section 4 contest at PPG Paints Arena.

Mars, with Wroblewski scoring eight points, took an 11-6 first-quarter lead but Montour came back to score 20 second-quarter points to tie the game 26-26 at halftime.

Mars wound up with a three-point lead – 41-38 – heading into the final quarter and then outscored Montour 18-6 in the last eight minutes, with Wroblewski leading the way. The Planets went 7-for-8 from the free-throw line in the final quarter.

Brandon Bennett scored 15 points to lead Montour, which is 2-5 overall and 1-2 in section play, while Rob Schmitt and Mark Carter each had 10.

Tampa Bay Christmas Invitational

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart fell 66-54 in overtime Monday to Science Hill of Johnson City, Tenn., in its second game at the Tampa Bay Christmas Invitational tournament, held at the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus in Wesley Chapel, Fla.

The Chargers, now 4-3, lost their tournament opener to North Tampa Christian Academy, 63-37, Saturday.

No details were available on either game.

OLSH is scheduled to wrap up tournament play Tuesday morning against Riverview Sarasota.
