Jake Johnson and Tiernan McCullough combined for 18 first-quarter points to send Our Lady of the Sacred Heart to a 78-31 victory over Western Beaver Tuesday night in a WPIAL Class 2A Section 4 boys basketball game at OLSH’s Angela Activities Center.
The Chargers, who improved to 14-4 overall and 9-1 in section play, sped to a 27-12 first-quarter lead and increased that to 43-20 at halftime.
Johnson finished with 23 points to lead all scorers and McCullough contributed 14. A total of 13 players scored at least two points for OLSH.
Nate Schwarz scored 10 points to lead Western Beaver.
Moon Area 70, Blackhawk 36
Caden Kopay led a balanced attack with 15 points and the Tigers used a fast start to take control on the way to a Class 5A Section 4 victory over the host Cougars.
Jackson Bauman added 13 points for Moon, which improved to 14-3 overall and 6-3 in section play.
Moon led 24-11 after one quarter and turned an 11-point halftime lead into a lost cause for Blackhawk by outscoring the Cougars 23-5 in the third quarter.
Caleb Waclawski contributed 11 points for Moon. Marco Fusetti led Blackhawk with 21 points and Carter Davis added 10.
Aquinas Academy 95, Cornell 70
Eduardo Benitez pumped in 40 points for the Raiders, but it wasn’t nearly enough as they fell to the Crusaders in a Class 1A Section 1 contest at Aquinas.
Jonah Burchill scored 26 points and Sam Duer added 21 for Aquinas, which led just 21-18 after one quarter. But the Crusaders outscored Cornell 24-12 in the second quarter to lead 45-30 at halftime. A 33-24 edge in the third quarter removed any doubt about the outcome.
Cornell fell to 4-13 overall and 2-5 in the section with the loss.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
South Fayette 81, Moon Area 37
Haylie Lamonde erupted for 31 points as the defending Class 5A state champion Lions whipped the Tigers in a Class 5A Section 3 game at South Fayette.
Juliette Leroux added 17 points for South Fayette, which improved to 18-1 overall and 10-0 in the section. Moon, led by Maria Depner’s 19 points, dropped to 6-11 overall and 2-7 in section play.
South Fayette, ranked No. 1 in the state by TribLive.com, led 24-11 after one quarter, widened its advantage to 42-21 at halftime and then outscored the Tigers 25-7 in the third quarter.
