High school basketball: Sto-Rox, Carlynton boys prevail; OLSH, Montour, Sto-Rox girls win

Adam Thomas led four players in double figures with 19 points and visiting Sto-Rox overcame an early deficit to defeat Cornell, 66-57, Monday night in a WPIAL nonsection boys basketball game.

Cornell, which dropped to 0-4 with the loss, jumped on top 10-6 after one quarter, with Terrance Collington scoring six points for the Raiders.

But Thomas, who accounted for all six of Sto-Rox’s first-quarter points, hit for 15 in the second quarter to help the Vikings outscore the Raiders 22-17 and take a 28-27 lead at halftime.

Collington continued his hot hand in the second quarter, scoring 10 points for Cornell.

The game remained tight in the third quarter, with Sto-Rox owning a 19-17 advantage, and the Vikings – now 1-1 — again hit for 19 in the final eight minutes to 13 for Cornell.

MJ Thomas scored nine of his 15 points in the final quarter for Sto-Rox and Karic Willis contributed six of his 16 in the quarter.

LJ Washington added 10 points for Sto-Rox.

Collington led Cornell with 21 points and Eduardo Benitez finished with 13.

Sto-Rox coach Ryan Hughes was happy with his team’s effort.

“They showed some grit tonight,” Hughes said, “because we didn’t play great, but we kept battling and getting stops when we needed them – and big baskets at the right time.”

Cornell coach Brian Bethel said his team was able to play with Sto-Rox “but we just couldn’t get over the hump. Our young guys are still going through a learning curve.”

Carlynton 55, Rochester 34

Ishaga Barre erupted for a game-high 21 points and the host Cougars used a big fourth quarter to pull away and defeat the Rams in a nonsection game.

The two teams were deadlocked at 6-6 after one quarter but Carlynton – now 2-1 — put 21 points on the board in the second quarter to build a 27-15 halftime lead. Mikey Jenkins scored nine of his 12 points in the second quarter for Carlynton and Barre added six.

Rochester responded in the third quarter, using a 17-11 advantage to pull within 38-32 heading into the final quarter. But the Cougars outscored the Rams 17-2 in the last eight minutes to win going away.

Barre scored nine of Carlynton’s 17 points in the fourth quarter.

Bobby George led Rochester with 10 points.


Butler 69, Bishop Canevin 53

Stainton Forbes connected for 25 points and Andrew Gettinger added 23 and the Golden Tornado took control with a big third quarter en route to a nonsection win over the Crusaders.

Butler led 18-16 after one quarter and 32-26 at halftime before outscoring Bishop Canevin 20-9 in the third quarter.

Drew Allen scored 16 points to lead Bishop Canevin. Jackson Maddix added 15 and Hakeem Hawkins finished with 10.


GIRLS

Montour 65, Central Valley 31

Claire Bannon scored 16 points and the unbeaten Spartans boasted four players scoring in double figures in a nonsection win over the visiting Warriors.

Montour, which improved to 4-0, jumped to a 10-point first-quarter lead, outscoring Central Valley 21-11, then extended that lead to 35-19 at halftime.

The Spartans put the game away by scoring 15 points in the third quarter to the Warriors’ 3.

Tiffany Miller, Siena Palmer and Zoe Woessner each added 10 points for Montour.

Emma Brown paced Central Valley with 16 points.


Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 50, Serra Catholic 39

Rowan Winter led all scorers with a career-high 16 points and the Chargers made a five-point halftime lead stand up on the way to a nonsection win over the Eagles.

Lola Garner added 14 points for OLSH, which led 12-6 after one quarter and 21-16 at halftime.

The Chargers, now 3-0, widened their lead to 34-26 heading into the final minutes and that proved to be enough for the win.

Serra pulled to within six points with 2 minutes remaining, but the Chargers scored the game’s final five points. OLSH went 7-for-8 from the free throw line from late in the third quarter to the end of the game.

Bella Dombrosky’s 15 points led Serra Catholic.


Sto-Rox 55, Springdale 15

Rae Johnston scored a game-high 16 points, including 10 in the third quarter, as the host Vikings rolled past the Dynamos in a nonsection game.

Johnston did all her scoring in the first three quarters as Sto-Rox coach Jeff Stuart emptied his bench in the final eight minutes. All nine Sto-Rox players scored at least one point.

Brooklynn Sykes added 15 points for the Vikings, who led 25-7 at halftime, and Allie Dotson contributed 10.

Sto-Rox evened its record at 2-2 with the win.
