High school boys: OLSH rebounds from quarterfinal loss to beat Chartiers-Houston in consolation play

Tiernan McCulough scored 17 points, including 12 in the first quarter, to help propel Our Lady of the Sacred Heart to a 54-45 victory over Chartiers-Houston Saturday in the consolation bracket of the WPIAL Class 2A Boys Basketball Tournament, played at Moon High School.

With the victory, the Chargers move on to play Greensburg Central Catholic, which whipped Northgate, 76-47, in the battle for fifth place.

The time and location of that fifth-place game will be announced later.

OLSH improved to 19-6 with win, as they rebounded from Thursday’s heartbreaking 55-50 loss to Jeannette in the quarterfinals. The Chargers led by 15 points in that game but couldn’t hold on.

McCullough’s 12 first-quarter points helped OLSH build a 20-12 lead, and Jake Johnson picked up in the second quarter where McCullough left off, as he scored 10 of the Chargers’ 12 points in the quarter. Thanks in part to Johnson, OLSH led 32-25 at halftime.

Chartiers-Houston, led by Nate Gregory’s 23 points, came on in the third quarter, outscoring OLSH 14-9 to trim the Chargers’ lead to 41-39 heading into the final eight minutes.

There, OLSH relied on Vann Kavals to carry much of the load, as he scored eight points in the quarter and the Chargers outscored the Buccaneers 13-6 to seal the win.

OLSH converted 7 of 12 free-throw attempts in the final quarter.

Johnson finished with 16 points and Kavals totaled 13 for the Chargers.
