The Moon Area boys golf team nearly put its name in the record books Thursday at the Tam O’Shanter Invitational tournament, held at Tam O’Shanter Golf Course in Hermitage.
The Tigers came within two strokes of setting the tournament record for low score, as they fired a collective 291 to capture the title.
That was the second-best score in the 44-year history of the tournament.
Moon’s Matthew Koch won medalist honors by shooting a 69.
Cooper Fazio placed fifth overall and Ian Bonidie wound up sixth. Both shot rounds of 73. Chris Brown finished with a 76 for Moon.
Brown will be back in action Monday when he competes in the final round of the WPIAL Class 3A Championship Tournament, held at Butler Country Club.
Brown shot a 5-over-par 77 in the first round to earn a spot in the final round. He’s the lone West Hills area golfer to reach the boys Class AAA final.
Moon’s trio of Liv DeGori, Angelina Schild and Aubrey Marasco will continue competing in the Class 3A Girls Tournament, which concludes Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Sewickley Heights Golf Club.
DeGori shot an 81 Tuesday to tie for fourth place after one round. Schild and Marasco shot 92 and 102, respectively.
Katie Suess of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart will compete in final round of the Class 2A tournament, which also will take place Wednesday at Sewickley Heights.
In the boys Class 2A tournament, OLSH senior Jonah Schollaert takes a two-stroke lead into Tuesday’s final round at Valley Brook Country Club in McMurray. Schollaert leads Greensburg Salem’s Luke Sikora by two strokes.
Also competing will be Bishop Canevin’s Jamin Brock, who shot a 79 in the opening round.
WPIAL team championships will take place the week of Oct. 6. OLSH and Bishop Canevin both will battle in the Class 2A boys team tournament starting Oct. 9 at Hickory Heights Golf Club. Moon’s boys team plays in the Class 3A tournament Oct. 7 at Duck Hollow Golf Club and Moon’s girls team will play in the Class 3A tournament Thursday, Oct. 9, at Cedarbrook Golf Course.
