Brady Wagner collected three hits and drove in a pair of runs to back John Poppert’s complete-game five-hitter on the mound, leading Bishop Canevin to a 9-2 victory over host Steel Valley Wednesday in a WPIAL non-section baseball game.
The Crusaders, bound for the Class 1A playoffs after finishing tied for third in Section 3, broke through for three first-inning runs, with two of them scoring on a misplay that followed Wagner’s base hit. Wagner scored later that inning on Poppert’s fielder’s choice.
Wagner singled home a run in the second to make it 4-0 and a bases-loaded walk to Jackson Maddix increased the Crusaders’ lead to 5-0 in the third inning.
Bishop Canevin put the game away with four runs in the sixth. Jalen Jackson contributed an RBI single, Jamin Brock drove in a run with a fielder’s choice and two more runs scored on a wild pitch and Wagner’s steal of home.
Poppert limited Steel Valley to five hits and no earned runs while walking three and striking out seven for the Crusaders, who improved to 6-12 and finished 3-5 in section play.
Montour 14, Quaker Valley 0
Levi Gladu’s bases-clearing triple keyed a seven-run second inning and sent the Spartans on their way to a non-section win over the visiting Quakers.
Dalton Young had two hits and drove in two runs for Montour while Matteo Weber had a hit and three RBIs. Sal Magliocco also had a hit and drove in two runs for Montour, which improved to 14-5 overall heading into next week’s WPIAL Class 5A tournament. The Spartans finished second in Section 4, a game behind Thomas Jefferson.
Michael Ivanoff had a hit and drove in two runs and also pitched three hitless innings, striking out seven and walking one.
SOFTBALL
Montour 18, Mars Area 5
Paige Fiedler and Natalie Ciamacco each had three hits and three RBIs and Hailey Staub clubbed a three-run homer as the Spartans came from behind to beat the Fightin’ Planets in a non-section game.
Montour trailed 4-2 after four innings before exploding for 16 runs in the final two innings to claim the win.
A five-run outburst in the fifth inning gave the Spartans a 7-4 lead. Ciamacco singled in two runs, Hailey Herbst doubled home a run and Fiedler and Alexa Richardson each had RBI singles in that rally.
After Mars cut Montour’s lead to 7-5, the Spartans put the game away by pushing across 11 runs in the sixth inning. Staub’s three-run bomb was the big blow, but she had plenty of help. Fiedler drove in two runs with a double and a triple that inning and Ciamacco also tripled in a run. Hailey Herbst had a two-run single while Emily McClean drove in a run with a base hit and Caylee Moser contributed a sacrifice fly.
Cayley Hughes, Moser and Herbst each had two hits for the Spartans, who claimed a share of the Class 5A Section 3 title, finishing 7-3 in section play. Montour will move on to the WPIAL tournament with an overall record of 12-5.
