Drew Allen led four Bishop Canevin players in double figures with 18 points as the Crusaders downed visiting Carlynton, 83-53, Tuesday night in a WPIAL Class 3A Section 2 boys basketball game.
Damar Olds added 16 points for Bishop Canevin, which improved to 6-7 overall and 1-1 in section play.
The Crusaders led 19-10 after one quarter and 37-29 at halftime, but the Cougars remained within striking distance after three quarters, trailing 59-48. But Bishop Canevin outscored Carlynton 24-5 in the final quarter to win going away.
Jackson Maddix scored 14 points and Lamier Wade finished with 13 for Bishop Canevin.
Maurice Segnonou and DeWayne Fisher each scored 16 points for Carlynton, which fell to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in section play.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 54, Shenango 30
Tiernan McCullough scored 11 of his game-high 20 points in the opening quarter, propelling the Chargers past the Wildcats in a Class 2A Section 4 game at OLSH’s Angela Activities Center.
McCullough’s first-quarter exploits, which included a trio of 3-pointers, helped OLSH establish an 18-8 lead, and the Chargers held a 23-12 advantage at halftime.
McCullough added nine more points in the third quarter, helping OLSH extend its lead to 48-22 heading into the final eight minutes.
Jake Johnson added 10 points for the Chargers, who improved to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in section play.
Caleb McConnell led Shenango with seven points.
Montour 46, West Allegheny 32
Brandon Bennett led a balanced attack with 11 points and the Spartans defeated the Indians in a Class 5A Section 4 game at Montour.
Bennett connected on a pair of 3-pointers for the winners, with both coming in the final quarter.
Sal Magliocco and Mark Carter each finished with nine points for Montour, which improved to 4-7 overall and 2-3 in section play.
Montour jumped to an 11-2 lead after one quarter and held an 18-8 advantage at halftime. The Spartans extended their lead to 33-16 heading into the final quarter.
Magliocco had seven of his nine points in the third quarter.
Josiah Johnson led West Allegheny with 16 points.
Sto-Rox 54, Washington 45
Marcus Griffin scored 18 points and L.J. Washington added 15 to spark the Vikings past the Little Prexies in a Class 3A Section 2 game at Sto-Rox.
The Vikings, now 6-4 overall and 2-1 in section play, led 17-11 after one quarter and 25-21 at halftime, with Washington scoring eight points in the first two quarters.
Griffin came alive in the second half, scoring 10 points in the third quarter as Sto-Rox increased its lead to 42-34, and he added four more in the final quarter.
William Callam led Washington with 17 points and Vincent Johnson added 15.
Avella 55, Cornell 13
The Raiders could not get going offensively, netting just two points in each of the first three quarters on the way to a Class 1A Section 1 loss to the Eagles.
Avella outscored Cornell 20-2 in the first quarter and upped its lead to 45-4 at halftime.
Bryce Wright led Avella with 15 points and Brayden Fuller added 11.
Terrance Collington scored six points to lead Cornell, which fell to 3-10 overall and 1-2 in section play.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Brentwood 35, Carlynton 19
The visiting Cougars trailed just 13-10 at halftime, but the Spartans ran away in the second half to post a win in a Class 2A Section 2 matchup.
Carlynton had a rough shooting performance during the final two quarters and failed to keep up defensively with the Spartans.
Lucy Vetter scored six points to lead the Cougars, who fell to 3-7 overall and 0-3 in section play.
PIHL HOCKEY
Moon Area 5, Hampton 1
The Tigers spotted the Talbots a 1-0 first-period lead, then scored three times in the second period and twice more in the third to post a Varsity Class A Blue Division victory Monday night at Frozen Pond Arena.
Five different players scored goals for Moon, which improved to 9-3-1-1 and maintained a hold on third place in the division, three points in back of second-place Quaker Valley and four behind Canon-McMillan.
David Gallup’s goal 3 minutes and 36 seconds into the second period tied the score for Moon and the Tigers went in front for good on Brody Eckert’s goal at the 4:30 mark
Ryan Muldowney added a goal later in the period and Jordan Rieke and Clayton Foster tallied third-period goals for the Tigers.
Eric Hartman assisted on two Moon goals while Rieke, Foster, Eckert and Muldowney each contributed one assist.
