Bishop Canevin’s Justin Melvin wasn’t picky about who was throwing the ball Saturday night at Dormont Stadium.
As long as it was thrown Melvin’s direction, that’s all that mattered.
The 6-foot-2, 175-pound junior wideout was on the receiving end of four touchdown passes that helped the Crusaders roll to a 46-28 victory over previously unbeaten Laurel in a WPIAL nonconference football matchup.
The four touchdown receptions established a Bishop Canevin single-game record.
Melvin hauled in a pair of scoring passes from Brady Wagner – one 9 yards out and one from 8 yards out – and then teamed with Damar Olds for two more touchdown passes of 20 and 30 yards.
Myontae Mott added two rushing touchdowns from 21 yards and 3 yards for Bishop Canevin, which evened its nonconference record at 2-2, and Neuval Bone went in from 27 yards out for the Crusaders.
The two teams were deadlocked 13-13 before Bishop Canevin scored the next 26 points in a row on a run by Mott, a pair of Melvin touchdown catches and Bone’s TD run.
Laurel quarterback Luca Santini scored on a pair of short touchdown runs for the Spartans, who fell to 3-1. Tyler Fuchs also blocked a punt and returned it 4 yards for a touchdown for Laurel.
Wagner finished with 12 completions in 15 attempts for 171 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Olds completed 3 of 4 for 72 yards and two touchdowns. Melvin totaled 89 yards on five catches and Olds caught five passes for 83 yards.
