High school roundup: Carlynton baseball rallies to win wild one over Bentworth

Carter Donlin’s RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning capped a three-run rally and gave Carlynton a wild 15-14 come-from-behind victory over Bentworth Friday in a WPIAL non-section baseball game at Carlynton.

Bentworth built a 7-2 lead through 4½ innings before Carlynton’s bats came alive. The Cougars scored two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings and added a single run in the bottom of the seventh inning on Isaac Anker’s RBI double to tie the score at 7-7 and send the game to extra innings.

Bentworth erupted for five runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a 12-7 lead, but Carlynton answered with five runs of its own to tie the game at 12-12. The first two runs of the inning came in on hit batsmen, and Noah Stiffler’s two-run double brought the Cougars to within a run at 12-11. Graydon Harvey then pulled Carlynton even with an RBI single.

Bentworth again moved in front in the 10th inning, 14-12, but the Cougars used RBI singles by Michael Jenkins and Maddox Horrell to tie the score at 14-14.

Donlin, who had struck out his first four times at bat, came through with the game-winning hit to drive in Jenkins with the winning run.

Anker led Carlynton’s 18-hit attack by going 5 for 7 with two RBIs and four runs scored. Jenkins went 2 for 4 with 5 RBIs and Eric Firle went 4 for 4 and scored four runs. Firle and Anker each had two doubles.


Obama Academy 17, Sto-Rox 1

Caleb Meyers went 3 for 3 and drove in four runs as the Eagles beat the Vikings in a non-section game at Sto-Rox.

Elijah Rawlings and Braylon Johnson also had three hits apiece for Obama Academy, which pushed across 13 runs in the opening inning of a game that went just three innings.


SOFTBALL

Sewickley Academy 16, Cornell 0

Sanaa Grant had three hits, including a double and a home run, and drove in four runs to pace the Panthers past the Raiders in a Class 1A Section 1 game at Cornell that ended after five innings.

Charlotte Andrews finished with two hits and drove in three runs while Cherish Wilson had two hits and two RBIs.


TRACK AND FIELD

Bulldogs and Bridges Invitational

Carlynton’s Miyando Lewis won one event and placed third in another to highlight the West Hills’ contingent’s performance at the Bulldogs and Bridges Invitational.

Lewis took the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.91 seconds and was third in the 400 meters in 54.26.

Carlynton’s 4×100 meter relay team and 4×400 meter relay team both placed third.

Sto-Rox also participated in the meet and the Vikings’ 4×100 meter relay placed fifth with a time of 48.79.

On the girls side, Carlynton’s Willow Palmer placed second and third in the shot put and discus, respectively,

Palmer uncorked a throw of 28 feet, 8 inches to take second in the shot put and used a mark of 81-11 to place third in the discus.

Palmer’s teammate, Riley Mauro, sped to second- and fourth-place finishes in the girls 300- and 100-meter hurdle events. Mauro clocked a time of 51.19 to place second in the 300 hurdles and 18.30 to place fourth in the 100 hurdles.
