High school roundup: Carlynton, OLSH eliminated in girls Class 1A soccer tournament

Both West Hills girls soccer teams competing in the WPIAL Class 1A tournament saw their seasons come to an end in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Ninth-seeded Carlynton lost 2-0 to top-seed Sewickley Academy in a game played at Quaker Valley High School.

And No. 10 seed Our Lady of the Sacred Heart fell 2-0 to No. 2 seed Bentworth at Peters Township Middle School.

Emelia Carrabba of Sewickley Academy broke a scoreless tie with about 15 minutes to play in the game, giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead, and Mackenzie Dice added a second goal several minutes later, and that was all they needed to advance.

Carlynton, which opened its run in the playoffs with a 2-1 win over Eden Christian Tuesday night, finished its season 11-8-1.

OLSH, which squeezed past Aquinas Academy in its playoff opener Tuesday, wound up with an 8-7-1 overall record.

Brielle Dillon scored both goals for Bentworth Saturday, with the first one coming five minutes into the game and the second one coming five minutes later.

In next week’s Class 3A tournament, Moon Area will take on South Fayette at 8 p.m. Monday in a semifinal match at Keystone Oaks High School.

Third-seeded Moon won its quarterfinal matchup against Shaler, 2-1, Thursday. South Fayette is seeded No. 2 in the Class 3A tournament.


FOOTBALL

Bishop Canevin 43, Burgettstown 10

Myontae Mott ran for two touchdowns and Thomas Coates caught a pair of scoring passes to help the Crusaders whip the Blue Devils at Dormont Stadium.

The Crusaders already wrapped up the No. 3 seed in the Class 1A playoffs prior to Saturday night’s game. Bishop Canevin will host No. 14 seed Greensburg Central Catholic at 7 p.m. Friday at Dormont Stadium in an opening-round game.

The Crusaders improved to 7-3 overall and 5-1 in Black Hills Conference action. Burgettstown finished 1-8 overall and 0-6 in conference play.

Mott scored on runs of 40 and 60 yards. Coates caught a 70-yard touchdown pass from Brady Wagner to start the scoring for Bishop Canevin, which led 35-0 after one  quarter.

Coates later caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Damar Olds.

Alex Kirk and Ka’Vere Holman both ran for touchdowns for the Crusaders, with Kirk going in from 20 yards out and Holman from 47 yards.


HOCKEY

Moon Area 5, Beaver 1

David Gallup netted a pair of goals and the Tigers used a three-goal second-period outburst to take control in a PIHL Varsity Class A Blue matchup Thursday night at Brady’s Run Ice Arena.

Brady Eckert, Clayton Foster and Jordan Rieke each added a goal for Moon, which improved to 4-0-1-1-0 and is tied for first with Quaker Valley.

Gio Thompson contributed a pair of assists while Tanner Desselle, Ben Poeta, Foster and Rieke each picked up one.

Moon goaltender Carson Relyea stopped 22 of 23 shots on goal in the win.


Blackhawk 4, Montour 1

The Cougars used goals from four different players to subdue the Spartans in a PIHL Varsity Class A Blue matchup Thursday night at Brady’s Run Ice Arena.

Daniel Ostrom, Grant Shroads, Dominic Giocondi and Finn Conlon each scored once for the winners. Dylan Hogue netted Montour’s lone goal.

The loss dropped the Spartans to 0-3-0-1-0.
