Eduardo Benitez drained a pair of free throws with 8 seconds remaining to snap a 52-52 tie and lift Cornell to a 54-52 victory over Brashear Wednesday night in a nonsection boys basketball game at Cornell.
Benitez led all scorers with 26 points and netted eight of those in the final quarter.
Cornell, now 2-5, trailed 39-37 after three quarters but outscored Brashear 17-13 in the final eight minutes.
Zy’Air Dupree scored six of his 10 points in the final quarter for the Raiders, who also got 10 points from Terrance Collington.
Trevon Rosario Jones led Brashear with 15 points and Ryan White added 10.
Brentwood 70, Carlynton 58
Deng Mu and Xh’avier Nunez combined for 49 points as the Spartans topped the Cougars in a nonsection contest at Brentwood.
Mu, a 6-foot-8 senior, hit for 26 points – 13 in each half – while Nunez finished with 23 for Brentwood, which led 31-21 at halftime.
Dewayne Fisher and Isaac Anker each scored 15 points for Carlynton, with 13 of Anker’s coming in the second half.
The Cougars dropped to 2-4 with the loss.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Shaler 43, Moon Area 38
Reese Smetanka led the Titans with 25 points as they pulled out a nonsection victory over the host Tigers.
Moon, which fell to 3-2 with the loss, trailed by just two points, 38-36, with 38.1 seconds left, but a Tigers foul put Emily Berger on the free throw line for Shaler. Berger hit one free throw, but the Titans rebounded Berger’s miss on the second free throw, and that led to another Moon foul.
Smetanka then connected on both free throws with 30 seconds remaining to make the score 41-36, and the Tigers could get no closer.
Avery Pacheco led Moon with 13 points.
Geibel Catholic 62, Bishp Canevin 29
Mallory Clemmer matched the Crusaders’ offensive output singlehandedly, pouring in 29 points as the Gators rolled to a Class 1A Section 2 win.
Alexa Morgan added 14 points for the winners.
Bishop Canevin’s Vyla Tomachesky played excellent defense, limiting Geibel all-state standout Emma Larkin to 13 points – well below her average.
Despite Tomachesky’s efforts, Geibel led 17-7 after one quarter and expanded that advantage to 34-12 at halftime.
Isabella Sysak scored 10 points to lead Bishop Canevin. Kya Cooley added nine and Gianna Matthews had eight for the Crusaders, who fell to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in section play.
Fort Cherry 64, Carlynton 13
The Rangers sprinted to a 24-5 lead in the opening quarter and then blanked the Cougars in the second quarter while scoring 24 points of their own to build a 48-5 halftime lead on the way to a Class 2A Section 2 win.
Carlynton finally ended the scoring drought with 5 minutes, 45 seconds remaining in the third quarter, but by that time the Cougars trailed 57-7.
Brooke Cornali scored 21 points to lead Fort Cherry while Allison Litman added 12.
Carlynton fell to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in section play.
SWIMMING
Cornell vs. Beaver Falls/Hopewell
The Raiders girls team defeated Hopewell 74-56 and lost to Beaver Falls 76-55 while the boys team lost twice – 87-55 to Hopewell and 80-51 to Beaver Falls.
Against Hopewell, Kendra Durec posted MAC cut times in the 50 and 100 freestyle events along with the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke; she earlier made the qualifying mark for the 200 freestyle. Noah Pickett already has qualified for the WPIAL championship meet in the 50, 100 and 200 free events, the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly. Mimi Chamberlain has made the WPIAL grade in the 200 and 500 free events along with the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM events.
Other swimmers who have posted qualifying times for the MAC Championships include Drake Barr (50 free, 100 free, 100 back), Chris Pickett (100 back, 100 fly, 500 free) and Grace Turko (100 free, 200 free, 100 back, 200 IM).
