High school roundup: Machusko’s big day propels Moon Area past South Fayette

Nick Machusko led a 20-hit attack with four hits – including a two-run homer — and five RBIs, powering Moon Area to a 16-6 victory over South Fayette Tuesday in a WPIAL Class 5A Section 2 baseball game at South Fayette.

Eight players had at least two hits each for Moon, which scored seven runs in the first two innings but saw South Fayette answer with six in their first three at-bats. The Tigers then broke the game open with a seven-run fifth inning and added single runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings.

Will Swisher’s two-run single started the scoring in the fifth and Machusko followed with his two-run bomb to make it 11-6. Taylor Ebner contributed an RBI single to drive home Owen Amey, who had doubled, and Thad Longwell wrapped up the scoring in that inning with a two-run single.

The Tigers and Lions traded two-run first-innings, with Moon’s first run coming home on a wild pitch and the second one courtesy of Machusko’s RBI double.

The Tigers followed with a five-run second inning to go on top 7-2. Longwell’s RBI single gave Moon a 3-2 lead and Savario Vandetti followed with a run-scoring single to make it 4-2. The third RBI single of the inning, this one from Swisher, increased Moon’s lead to 5-2 and Machusko followed suit with yet another run-scoring single to make it 6-2. The Tigers’ final run of the inning scored on an error, giving Moon a 7-2 lead.

Ashton Donlin singled home the first run of the inning, Graydon Harvey smacked a two-run single to tie the game, Anker followed with his game-winning base hit and Mike Jenkins tacked on an RBI single to close out the scoring.

Sewickley Academy went in front for good, 6-3, with three runs in the bottom of the third. The Crusaders pulled to within two runs on John Poppert’s RBI double in the fifth and cut the margin to 6-5 in the seventh on Astor’s second RBI base hit. Bishop Canevin loaded the bases in that inning with two outs but could not bring home the tying run.
