High school roundup: Montour baseball wins big; OLSH, Moon Area roll to flag football victories

Zander Stern collected three hits and drove in four runs, and Michael Ivanoff slugged a two-run homer to propel Montour to a 16-3 thumping of Gateway Thursday night in a WPIAL Class 5A Section 4 baseball game at Gateway.

Montour struck for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back.

Tyler Puffer, Stern and Ivanoff contributed run-scoring singles in that opening frame and Caleb Armbruster added a two-run base hit.

Montour added two runs in the second inning and four more in the third, highlighted by Ivanoff’s two-run homer and a pair of bases-loaded walks.

Stern added a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning and an RBI single in the fifth for the Spartans, who collected 15 hits to four for Gateway.

Matteo Weber had three hits and scored three runs for Montour.


SOFTBALL

Burgettstown 5, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 0

The Blue Devils scored at least one run in each of the first four innings and went on to defeat the Chargers in a Class 2A Section 3 contest at Youthtowne.

Raya Sentipal went 3 for 3 and scored three runs for the winners while Brooklyn Robinson had a pair of hits and drove in two runs.

OLSH managed just two hits off Burgettstown’s Evelyn Lehman – a double from Leann Walzer and a single from Nevaeh Morin. Lehman walked three and struck out nine in the complete-game shutout.


Chartiers-Houston 16, Carlynton 0

Seanna Riggle had three hits and drove in two runs and Jordyn Hollebach had a hit and three RBIs to lead the Buccaneers past the Cougars in a Class 2A Section 3 game shortened to four innings.

Kiera Drilak added two RBIs for Chartiers-Houston and Taryn Drilak finished with three hits.

Danica DeCecco and Sarah Loney each had a hit for Carlynton.


FLAG FOOTBALL

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 19, West Allegheny 8

Lola Garner and Lily Baker connected on a touchdown pass while Jules Goshen and Natalie Turcios each ran for a TD as the Chargers downed the Indians in a Section 4 game.

OLSH’s defense held West Allegheny scoreless until the game’s final play, when the Indians scored on a desperation pass.

Shae Trombetta was a demon on defense for the Chargers, picking off three passes, and Reagan Kavals registered one sack. Trombetta also scored a point after touchdown, which picked up its second win this week.


Moon Area 51, Propel Andrew Street 0

Kendall Dydek and Madi Wilson each scored two touchdowns and Syd Ray threw for four scores to help the Tigers to an easy Section 4 win and improve to 5-1.

Sara Tavares and Layla Morrow both scored their first touchdowns of the season. Elena Bates had three interceptions on defense and ran one back for a touchdown. Sarah Tatala also recorded her first interception.


BOYS VOLLEYBALL

South Fayette 3, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 1

The Lions handed the Chargers their first loss of the season, winning by scores of 25-22, 25-10, 24-26, 25-17, in a Class 2A Section 4 match.

Paddy Altmar had 10 kills and eight blocks while Isaac Tarbuk registered 12 kills and two blocks for OLSH.

Brady Rooney finished with five kills and a block and Aiden Curry added 27 assists and one block for the Chargers, who return to action Tuesday at home against Trinity.


Seneca Valley 3, Moon Area 0

The Raiders rolled to a sweep of the Tigers in a Class 3A Section 1 match, winning by game scores of 25-8, 25-14, 25-13.

Moon will next compete in the Upper St. Clair Invitational Saturday.
