High school roundup: Montour, Bishop Canevin fall in boys play; Carlynton posts girls win

Damian Harrison scored 11 of his game-high 24 points in the third quarter to help New Castle pull away and beat visiting Montour, 61-40, Tuesday night in a WPIAL boys nonsection basketball game.

The Red Hurricanes got off to a 12-7 lead after one quarter and increased it to 27-17 at halftime.

Harrison, who had eight points in the first half, erupted for 11 points in the third quarter – including three 3-pointers – as New Castle extended its lead to 46-29 heading into the final eight minutes.

Marino Graham added 14 points for New Castle and Kai Cox chipped in 12.

Löic Kalau scored 15 points, collected 11 rebounds and blocked four shots to lead Montour, which fell to 0-2. Zane Schachter and Mark Carter each finished with eight points.

Montour coach Bill Minear said the game was a good learning experience for his young, inexperienced squad and added that the Spartans had a tough time finding the range from long distance.

“We didn’t shoot from the 3-point line too well,” he said. “We only made two 3-pointers and had numerous open looks. But we competed hard and Löic Kalau was a bright spot.”

The Trojans featured four players who scored at least 18 points, led by Jason Fredericks’ 22, on the way to a nonsection win over the Crusaders.
