High school roundup: Montour blanks Trinity in girls soccer, setting up showdown with Moon

Irelynn Hobbs poured in three more goals to spark visiting Montour to a 5-0 victory over Trinity Monday in a Class 3A Section 2 girls soccer match.

With the victory, the Spartans improved to 6-1 overall and 5-0 in section play.

Uma Hahn and Vanessa Apicella each contributed a goal for Montour, which meets Moon in a key section match set for Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Montour.

The Tigers will bring a 5-0 section record and an overall mark of 6-1 into Wednesday’s clash.


Sewickley Academy 7, Carlynton 1

Bella D’Antonio scored the only goal for the Cougars, with that coming on a penalty kick with about 10 minutes remaining, in their Class 1A Section 3 matchup. Sewickley Academy led 4-0 at halftime.

The loss leaves Carlynton with a 3-2 record in Section 3 play.


Aquinas Academy 7, Bishop Canevin 0

The “other” Crusaders cruised to a win past Bishop Canevin in a Class 1A Section 1 match. No information on the Aquinas Academy goal scorers was available.


BOYS SOCCER

Plum 8, Montour 1

Cam Gallagher scored the Spartans’ lone goal as they fell to the Class 4A Mustangs in a nonsection match at Montour.

Gallagher’s goal came with 19 minutes left in the second half for the Spartans, who played their junior varsity team the entire second half and the last third of the first half.


GIRLS GOLF

Moon Area 173, Bethel Park 197

Liv DeGori dropped a 45-foot birdie putt on the opening hole on her way to a round of 39, sparking the Tigers past the Black Hawks in a Class 3A Section 2 match.

Aubrey Marasco also nailed a long putt of about 40 yards on the No. 3 hole and finished with a 40. Angelina Schild carded a 44 for the Tigers and Hope Cordle shot 50. Sarah Jakel led Bethel Park with a round of 47.

Moon’s final section match of the regular season will take place Thursday at Moon Golf Club against Upper St. Clair.


GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Bishop Canevin 3, St. Joseph 2

The Crusaders outlasted the Spartans, winning by scores of 29-27, 25-19, 22-25, 19-25, 15-7 in a nonsection match at Bishop Canevin. No individual statistics were reported.


GIRLS TENNIS

Shaler 5, Moon Area 0

The Tigers came up short in this Class 3A Section 2 match with the Titans.

Both No. 1 singles Hayley Bates and No. 3 singles Scarlet Eubanks took their respective opponents to three sets but neither one could break through.

Bates fell 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 to Alexis Frisbee while Eubanks lost 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 to Chloe Mauer.

Also falling for Moon were No. 2 singles Cailyn Frye, the top doubles team of Vita Hazen and Ella Stephenson and the No. 2 doubles duo of Kristina Singh and Caroline Hall.


Butler Area 3, Montour 2

The Golden Tornado edged the Spartans in a Class 3A Section 2 match. No other details were available.
