High school roundup: Montour duo qualifies for WPIAL doubles tournament

Montour’s duo of Jonah Camardese and Trey Varga advanced to the finals of the WPIAL Class 2A Section 2 Doubles Tournament Tuesday but came up short in a battle with the defending WPIAL champion tandem from South Park.

Camardese and Varga, who were seeded No. 2 in the field, opened play by beating No. 7 seed Max Klein and Xavier O’Leary of Carlynton, 10-2.

The Montour team then posted a win over the No. 3 seed, from South Park, which put Camardese and Varga in the finals against Jonah Jasek and Steven Duing. But the South Park duo, the defending WPIAL champs and seeded No. 1 in Tuesday’s section tournament, came away with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.

By virtue of finishing second, Camardese and Varga earned a berth in the WPIAL Class 2A Doubles Tournament, which is scheduled to begin Tuesday, April 21, at Bethel Park High School and conclude Wednesday at North Allegheny.

The top four finishers in each section advanced to next week’s WPIAL tournament.

Montour’s Dom Passaro and Scott Berg, the section tournament’s No. 5 seed, defeated Carlynton’s Austin Gamble and Diimitri Valcheff – the No. 12 seed – 10-2 in the opening round. Passaro and Berg then lost 11-9 to Keystone Oaks’ top doubles team in the quarterfinals.

In Class 3A Section 2 play, Moon’s top tandem of Adam Jaczcar and Shaurya Kapoor won their opening match, 10-1, over Mars’ No. 2 team and then lost in the quarterfinals to Pine-Richland’s top team, 10-3.

Moon’s No. 2 doubles team of Karthik Battu and Praytush Dhar was eliminated in the first round in a 10-7 loss to North Hills’ No. 1 team.

BASEBALL

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 6, Apollo-Ridge 2

Colby Lane’s two-run single capped a three-run first inning and that proved to be enough as the Chargers downed the Vikings in a Class 2A Section 3 game at Youthtowne.

Lane’s base hit drove home Chad Minton, who had reached on an error, and Dean Douglass, who was hit by a pitch. That gave OLSH a 3-0 lead, and after Apollo-Ridge scored single runs in the second and fourth innings to cut the deficit to 3-2, the Chargers pushed across three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-2.

Ryan DeNinno drove in one of the runs with a sacrifice and the other two runs scored on an error.

The Chargers finished with six hits and no one had more than one. Pitcher Hunter Mattern tossed a complete-game five-hitter, giving up one earned run and a walk while striking out three.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Trinity 3, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 1

The Chargers had to make do without the services of one of their top players in Paddy Altmar, as he turned an ankle early in the first set, and OLSH fell 25-23, 21-25, 25-21, 25-17 in a Class 2A Section 4 match at the Angela Activities Center.

The loss leaves the Chargers in third place in the section behind South Fayette and Trinity going into their match against Mars Wednesday.

Isaac Tarbuk and Brady Rooney each had 12 kills in a losing cause for OLSH while Oliver Tomsic finished with six kills and Aiden Curry registered 30 assists.
