High school roundup: Montour, Moon Area rally for baseball wins; Moon tops OLSH in flag football

Lane Martinec’s RBI single in the top of the seventh inning snapped a 10-10 tie and propelled Montour to a wild 11-10 victory over Baldwin Monday in a WPIAL Class 5A Section 4 baseball game at Baldwin.

The Highlanders built a 7-4 lead over the first five innings but the Spartans used the long ball to put together a six-run sixth-inning and take a 10-7 lead.

Tyler Puffer delivered a two-run homer and Zander Stern clubbed a grand slam later in the inning to help Montour move in front.

But Baldwin answered in its half of the sixth with three runs, all of which came on bases-loaded walks, to tie the score at 10-10.

Then in the seventh, Matteo Weber singled and moved to second on a walk to Puffer. Both runners advanced on a fielder’s choice before Martinec came through with what proved to be the game-inning single.

Baldwin put the tying run at second base with one out in the bottom of the seventh but Montour pitcher Michael Ivanoff struck out the final two batters to preserve the win.

Stern finished with two hits and 5 RBIs for the Spartans. Weber went 3 for 3 while Ivanoff, Martinec and Dalton Young each had two hits.

Moon 10, Upper St. Clair 8

The Tigers trailed 8-1 after one inning but rallied late, scoring five times in the sixth inning to overtake the host Panthers in a Class 5A Section 2 game.

Moon was down 8-5 going into the sixth before taking advantage of some sloppy Upper St. Clair play to go in front for keeps. A bases-loaded hit batsman enabled Moon to pull to within 8-6 and a misplayed ground ball resulted in two more runs to come home. Jayden Bittner’s sacrifice fly scored Nick Machusko with what proved to be the winning run.

Moon scored four times in the second inning to trim Upper St. Clair’s lead to 8-5. One run scored on an error while Savario Vandetti drove in two runs with a double and Will Swisher contributed a sacrifice fly.
