Paige Fiedler and Emily McClean combined for six hits and five RBIs to power Montour to a 10-3 victory over Moon Area Wednesday in a WPIAL Class 5A Section 3 softball game at Montour.
Moon struck for three runs in the first inning, with Abby Warnagiris’s two-run single being the key hit, but Montour answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning on Hailey Staub’s leadoff home run and an error.
Montour took the lead with two runs in the fifth inning when Fiedler singled home McClean and Staub, giving the Spartans a 4-3 lead.
Montour then broke the game open with a six-run sixth inning. Nicole Ciammaco, Cayley Hughes and Caylee Moser each contributed an RBI in that rally while Fiedler added an RBI double and McClean tripled home two runs.
McClean and Fielder each finished with three hits for the Spartans, who outhit the Tigers 12-7. Moser added a pair of hits for Montour.
Alina McMahon had three hits to lead Moon while Katie DeMarco added two.
Cornell 7, Avella 4
McKenna Griffith went the distance on the mound to pick up the win and helped her own cause with an inside-the-park grand slam as the Raiders downed the Eagles in a non-section game.
Griffith finished with eight strikeouts and walked just two in posting the win. She added two hits for the winners.
Bishop Canevin 22, Sto-Rox 0
Lia Pilarski retired all nine batters she faced in a three-inning game, striking out eight of them as the Crusaders blanked the Vikings in an exhibition game.
BASEBALL
Moon Area 9, Elizabeth-Forward 2
Andrew Cross’ solo home run snapped a 2-2 tie and ignited a seven-run sixth-inning rally that powered the Tigers past the Warriors in a Class 5A Section 2 game at Moon.
Cross’ home run gave Moon a 3-2 lead and the Tigers pushed across six more runs to win going away. Taylor Ebner contributed a sacrifice fly, Thad Longwell doubled home a pair of runs and Moon benefited from a wild pitch and a hit batsman to score two more runs.
Owen Amey and Nick Machukso added RBI singles for the Tigers.
Chris Sandor, Nate Weber and Tyler Ebner combined to limit the Warriors to four hits and no earned runs. Ebner worked the final three innings and allowed just one hit to pick up the win.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 11, Brentwood 1
Dean Douglass went 3 for 3 and drove in three runs and the Chargers outhit the Spartans 13-3 on the way to a Class 2A Section 3 victory at Youthtowne.
OLSH struck for four runs in the first inning and added three in the second to take a commanding lead.
Douglass and Angelo Ursida each smacked a two-run double in the first inning, and Douglass and Colby Lane each contributed an RBI double in the second.
Lane finished with three hits and two RBIs while Wyatt Walsh and James Hanna each contributed two hits and an RBI.
Hunter Mattern and Douglass combined to limit the Spartans to three hits and one walk while striking out seven.
Montour 15, Gateway 0
Tyler Puffer and Lane Martinec each drove in three runs to help the Spartans pound the Gators in a Class 5A Section 4 contest at Montour.
Montour pounded out 14 hits, with five players finishing with two each in Matteo Weber, Zander Stern, Zachary Ciamacco, Michael Ivanoff and Martinec.
Montour jumped to a 2-0 first-inning lead and then put the game out of reach with a seven-run second inning. Martinec drove in two runs with a base hit in that seventh inning while Weber, Stern, Ciamacco and Sal Magliocco all contributed RBI singles.
Weber worked three innings on the mound and gave up two hits while walking one and striking out five. Gavin Foley mopped up in the final inning.
Eden Christian Academy 9, Bishop Canevin 2
Three bases-loaded walks contributed to a nine-run fifth inning that powered the Warriors past the Crusaders in a Class 1A Section 3 contest.
Jackson Maddix’s two-run single gave Bishop Canevin a 2-0 lead in the third inning and the Crusaders maintained that edge until the bottom of the fifth. That’s when the Warriors sent 12 batters to the plate, with nine of them scoring. Noah Emswhiler contributed a two-run triple in that inning and Eden Christian made the most of five straight walks and an error.
Nate Astor and Brady Wagner each had two of Bishop Canevin’s six hits.
Keystone Oaks 6, Carlynton 4
Eric Firle went 3 for 3 and the Cougars mounted a late rally, but it came up short in their second loss to the Eagles in two days in a Class 2A Section 3 contest.
Keystone Oaks struck for three runs in the first inning but Carlynton cut that lead to 3-2 with single runs in the third and fifth innings. The Eagles answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth and two in the sixth and then held on as the Cougars scored a pair of runs in the seventh to get within 6-4.
Tyler Heinrich and Isaac Anker each had two hits and an RBI for Carlynton.
Ellwood City 18, Sto-Rox 1
The Wolverines struck for 11 runs in the first inning and cruised past the Vikings in a Class 3A Section 3 game that ended after three innings.
Sto-Rox managed just one hit – an RBI single by Marquis Thomas in the second inning.
Aaron Lake had a hit and drove in three runs for Ellwood City, which defeated the Vikings 19-0 Tuesday.
BOYS TENNIS
WPIAL Singles Tournament
Montour’s Jonah Camardese won his opening match Wednesday in the WPIAL Class 2A singles championships, held at North Allegheny High School, but fell in the quarterfinals and was eliminated.
Camardese, the seventh-seed, defeated No. 10 seed Tanner Schultz of Quaker Valley, 11-9, to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.
There, Camardese fell to No. 2 seed Silas Morris of Greensburg Salem, 10-2.
Belle Vernon’s Max Henson, the top seed and the defending WPIAL and PIAA champion, will take on No. 3 seed Will Meagher of Quaker Valley in Thursday’s championship match.
