Montour’s Jonah Camardese advanced to Thursday’s WPIAL Class 2A Section 2 boys tennis singles finals, where he will take on the reigning WPIAL and PIAA champion Max Henson of Belle Vernon.
Belle Vernon does not compete as a team, but Henson is permitted to play as an individual.
Camardese is no stranger to the spotlight, having teamed with former Montour standout John Rohrkaste to win the WPIAL doubles championship two years ago.
Camardese and current Spartan Trey Varga placed third in last year’s section doubles tournament to advance to the WPIAL tournament but they were ousted in the opening round.
In Wednesday’s first round of section singles play, Camardese defeated Austin Dooley of Ringgold, 10-0; then downed Grant Goodman of South Park, 11-9, in the quarterfinals before beating Nolan Taucher of Frazier, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3, player in the semifinals.
Varga also competed in Wednesday’s singles tournament and won his opening-round match, 10-1, over Collin Zhang of Seton LaSalle before losing to Henson, 10-0, in the quarterfinals.
The top four finishers in each section advance to the WPIAL singles tournament, which will take place Tuesday, April 7, at North Allegheny.
In Class 3A action, Moon’s Srikarthik Battu fell 10-1 to Marcos Lopez of Seneca Valley in the first round of Section 2 competition and his Tigers teammate, Adam Jaszcar, lost 10-6 to Arav Amin of Pine-Richland.
