High school roundup: Moon Area, Montour, OLSH post baseball wins; Moon, OLSH prevail in softball

Andrew Cross slugged a two-run homer and Moon Area struck for six runs in the first two innings combined on the way to a 7-4 victory over visiting Upper St. Clair Tuesday in a WPIAL Class 5A Section 2 baseball game.

The Tigers scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to overcome a 1-0 deficit and never trailed again. Owen Amey’s RBI single tied the score at 1-1 and Jayden Bittner followed with a two-run double to make it 3-1. Bittner later scored on an error, giving Moon a 4-1 lead.

After the Panthers pulled to within 4-2 in the second, Cross delivered his two-run bomb in the bottom of the inning, and Taylor Ebner’s RBI single in the third put Moon on top 7-2.

Amey and Cross each finished with two hits for Moon. Chris Sandor worked 5 1/3 innings and allowed seven hits and one earned run while striking out four.


Montour 7, Baldwin 1

Zander Stern’s fifth-inning sacrifice fly gave the Spartans the lead for good and they tacked on five more runs in the following frame for good measure in a Class 5A Section 4 victory over the visiting Highlanders.

Montour trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the fifth but pulled even on Zachary Ciamacco’s RBI triple, and Ciamacco scored on Stern’s sacrifice fly.

Stern delivered another sacrifice fly in the sixth while Sal Magliocco drove in a run with a single and Caleb Armbruster contributed a two-run double.

Montour starter Michael Ivanoff allowed two hits and a run over five innings and Cyprian Slifkey pitched two hitless innings in relief.


Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 10, Springdale 0

Colby Lane collected two hits and drove in four runs as the Chargers whipped the Dynamos in a Class 2A Section 3 game at Youthtowne.

OLSH finished with 14 hits while Chargers pitcher Ryan DeNinno limited Springdale to just three. DeNinno walked one and struck out 11 in the six-inning contest.

James Hanna had three of the Chargers’ 14 hits while Angelo Ursida and Dean Douglass each added two hits. Bruno Williams, Chad Minton and Wyatt Walsh contributed a hit and an RBI apiece.


Serra Catholic 5, Bishop Canevin 4

Jake Anderson’s RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the Eagles past the visiting Crusaders in a Class 1A Section 3 contest.

Serra led 2-1 going into the seventh inning before Bishop Canevin scored a pair of runs on a misplay that followed a base hit by Jamin Brock. But the Eagles used an RBI single from Aiden Corbett in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game and force extra innings.

The Crusaders took advantage of another Serra error to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth but the Eagles again tied the score in the bottom of the inning, this time on an RBI single from Max Black.

That set the stage for Anderson’s game-winning hit in the 10th.

Brady Wagner led the Crusaders with two hits while Nate Astor and Brock each had a hit and an RBI.


South Side 12, Carlynton 7

A six-run rally in the seventh inning punctuated by four bases-loaded walks gave the Rams a Class 2A Section 3 victory over the host Cougars.

Carlynton trailed 6-3 before scoring twice in the fourth and once in the sixth to tie the score at 6-6. The Rams then followed with their six-run outburst in the seventh to seal the win. In addition to the four bases-loaded walks, South Side scored runs on a wild pitch and a hit batsman, both with the bases loaded.

Graydon Harvey had two hits, including a two-run single, for Carlynton and Eric Firle had a two-run double. Michael Jenkins added an RBI double in a losing cause.


Quaker Valley 29, Sto-Rox 0

The Quakers erupted for 23 first-inning runs and went on to blank the Vikings in a Class 3A Section 1 game that ended after 2 ½ innings.

Brody Zyroll had a hit and drove in three runs for Quaker Valley while Rafe Furfari, Mason Wydra and Cameron Neal had two RBIs apiece.

The Quakers amassed 15 hits and took advantage of 11 walks and seven Sto-Rox errors.


SOFTBALL

Moon Area 8, Peters Township 1

Addyson Warren’s three-run homer in the first inning got the Tigers off and running on the way to a non-section win over the Indians.

Sydney Ray went 4 for 4, banging out a double and a triple, and drove in two runs for the Tigers while Brooklyn Hall and Katie DeMarco each finished with three hits.

DeMarco pitched a complete-game five-hitter, allowing just one run and two walks while striking out 11.


Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 5, South Side 1

Leann Walzer doubled home a run in the third inning and Mya Eshenbaugh added a two-run single in the fourth to help the Chargers down the Rams in a non-section game at Youthtowne.

Lauralei Kroniser added a hit and an RBI for OLSH, which finished with eight hits. No one had more than one.

Sophia Wasko went the distance on the mound for the Chargers, allowing just five hits and a run while striking out six.


Union Area 15, Bishop Canevin 0

Olivia Benedict had two hits, including a grand slam, and Irelyn Fisher opened the scoring with a two-run blast as the Scotties defeated the visiting Crusaders in a Class 1A Section 1 game that ended after three innings.

Olivia Williams added three hits for the winners. Union pitcher Korynne Shannon did not allow a hit and struck out five.
