High school roundup: Moon boys advance in WPIAL golf; Montour, OLSH post boys soccer, girls volleyball wins

Getting solid play from all five golfers, Moon Area’s boys team finished second in its half of the bracket in the opening round of the WPIAL Class 3A Team Championships, held Tuesday at Duck Hollow Golf Club in Uniontown.

The Tigers’ 399 score, second only to South Fayette in the bottom half of the eight-team bracket, was good enough to earn them a spot in Thursday’s final round.

Also advancing to Thursday’s final round from the bottom half of the bracket was Peters Township, which finished at 403.

Moon’s Chris Brown carded a 76, which tied him with Jameson Raynak of Central Catholic for the fourth-best score in the bracket. Jordan Mocello of Belle Vernon shot a 69, followed by South Fayette’s Sam Bishop and Brady Newman, who both shot 74s.

Patrick Queen followed Brown with a 77 for Moon while Matthew Koch shot 79, Ian Bonidie 82 and Eric Hartman 85.

In the top half of the bracket, which was played at the Links at Spring Church in Apollo, Fox Chapel finished on top with a score of 377, three strokes ahead of North Allegheny and four shots better than Franklin Regional.

All three of those teams will move on to Thursday’s final round, which will be held at 10 a.m. at Cedarbrook Gold Golf Course.

The winning team earns a berth in the PIAA Tournament.


BOYS SOCCER

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 10, Carlynton 1

Wyatt Walsh and Aaron Callahan each netted two goals as the Chargers blitzed the Cougars in a Class 1A Section 3 match at Carlynton.

Owen Minzer, Brady Hernandez, Peter Zink, Hunter Smith, Chad Minton and Dylan Luchinni each scored once for OLSH, which led 7-0 at halftime.

The Chargers improved to 13-0 overall and 7-0 in section play.


Montour 1, Moon Area 0 (OT)

Mario Passaro converted a shot from the left sideline about 20 yards from the goal with 39 seconds remaining in the first overtime to help the Spartans hand the Tigers their first loss in Class 3A Section 4 competition.

Dom Passaro earned the assist for Montour, which improved to 9-7 overall and 7-4 in section play. Moon lost its second straight game to fall to 10-5 overall and 9-1 in the section. The Tigers lead Chartiers Valley by one game with two section games remaining.


GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Montour 3, Moon 0

The Spartans took three straight sets from the Tigers, 26-24, 25-16, 25-23, in a Class 3A Section 1 match at Moon.

Delaney Barto had 16 digs, one ace and five assists for Montour while Sloane Cotten had 10 kills, a block and two aces and Zoe Woessner finished with 18 assists, three kills, two aces and six digs.

Also contributing to the win for Montour were Cathrine Schmidt (eight assists, three aces, seven digs), Annet Christian (10 kills, four blocks), Lily Woessner (six kills, five blocks), Delaney Dzorenda (three kills, four digs and an ace) and Alina Vlasch (three kills, one block).


Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 3, Northgate 0

The Chargers maintained a share of first place in Class 2A Section 1 by sweeping the Flames, 25-7, 25-15 and 25-22 at Northgate.

The win kept OLSH deadlocked with Hopewell in the section with a record of 10-1 going into Wednesday’s match at New Brighton.

Carmella Rippole had 10 assists and three digs for OLSH while Bella Coladonato had one kill, two aces and six digs and Leah Parker totaled six kills, three aces and four digs.

Also contributing to the win for OLSH were Sophia Wasko (five digs), Lola Garner (four kills, one ace, five digs), Malley Woynar (four kills, four aces, one block), Jordyn Velmire (one kill, six assists, four digs), Jenna Nastal (three kills, one ace, one dig), Frankie Schlatterer (three kills, one block) and Julia Davoli (one ace, three digs, excellent serve receive percentage).


Western Beaver 3, Cornell 0

The Golden Beavers won in three straight sets, 25-15, 25-11, 25-13, in a Class 1A Section 2 matchup at Western Beaver. No further details were available.


South Park 3, Sto-Rox 0

The Eagles swept the Vikings in a Class 2A Section 2 match at Sto-Rox, 25-5, 25-11, 25-11. No further details were available.
