Maria Depner exploded for 28 points and Moon Area poured in 24 first-quarter points on the way to a 55-27 victory over Hopewell Saturday night in the second night of the Moon Tip-Off girls basketball tournament.
Moon’s big first quarter resulted in a 24-4 lead and the Tigers followed it up with a 17-4 second-quarter advantage. That 41-13 lead was more than enough to help Moon improve to 2-1 overall on the season.
Adriana D’Alessio contributed 10 points for the winners.
Avery Boyd’s 13 points topped Hopewell’s scoring.
Carlynton Boys and Girls Tip-Off Classic
Propel Braddock Hills 60, Carlynton 38
Cadence Patrick scored a game-high 21 points and Trinity Finney added 13 to lead the Lions past the Cougars in the tournament championship game.
Propel Braddock Hills outscored Carlynton 23-7 in the first quarter and led 40-18 at halftime.
Lucy Vetter’s 12 points led Carlynton, now 1-1, while Carlee Hughes and Nia McGinnis each added 10.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Central Catholic Tip-Off Tournament
Moon 39, Central Catholic 34
Braeden Stuart led the Tigers with 10 points in a win over the Raiders, helping Moon improve to 3-0 on the season.
Moon led 15-5 after one quarter, but Central Catholic chipped away at the lead and trailed 31-27 heading into the final quarter.
But the Tigers wound up outscoring the Raiders 8-7 in the final eight minutes to hold on for the win.
Carlynton Boys and Girls Tip-Off Classic
Charleroi 76, Cornell 43
Eduardo Benitez scored 18 points to lead the Raiders, but it wasn’t enough as the Class 3A Cougars prevailed in the tournament consolation game.
No scoring information was available for Charleroi.
The Class 1A Raiders fell to 0-3 with the loss, with all three losses coming to Class 3A schools. They’ll face a fourth straight Class 3A opponent Monday when they host Sto-Rox.
WRESTLING
Chartiers-Houston Invitational
Five Moon Area wrestlers posted first-place finishes to help the Tigers capture the team championship in a field that featured 31 schools.
Bryce Thomas, Hayden Seymour, Cael Yanek, Liam Costa and Michael Olszewski all came away with titles for the Tigers, who finished with 231 team points to edge North Allegheny by five points. Montour finished sixth .
Thomas, wrestling at 107 pounds, decisioned Brayden Hanning of Jefferson-Morgan, 17-10, in the title match.
Seymour, at 114, won by technical fall over Giovanni Polito of North Hills, 15-0, at 2 minutes, 17 seconds.
Yanek decisioned Olympic Serrao of Mars, 11-4, at 139 pounds and Costa, wrestling at 172, blanked Carter Morvay of North Hills, 7-0.
Olszewski won by technical fall over Austin DeMartino of North Hills, 20-3, 4:19, at 189.
Moon’s Khalil Razipour decisioned Cameron Healy of North Hills, 4-2, in the third-place match at 215.
Tristan Esken (107) and Zachary Regotti (152) both wound up fifth in their respective weight classes.
Montour had one champion in Jacob Chacon, who decisioned Ayden Tavella of Shaler, 16-12, at 145 pounds.
The Spartans also had two third-place finishers in Rook Smith at 152 and Jacob Halbedl at 285.
Carlynton also competed in the tournament. Dom Cisnero-Torres reached consolation round No. 4 before falling to Brayden Taggard of Bentworth at 189.
