Kendall Dydek snapped a scoreless tie with 19 minutes to play in the match, leading Moon Area to a 1-0 victory over visiting Montour Monday night in a WPIAL Class 3A Section 2 battle at Tiger Stadium.
The victory clinched the section title for Moon, which wrapped up its section schedule with a spotless 12-0-0 record.
The Tigers are 16-1-0 overall, with the lone loss coming to Class 4A Pine-Richland, 2-1, in overtime on Sept. 6. Moon has won its last 12 in a row.
Riley LaFayette assisted on Dydek’s goal and Ainslie Romasco earned the shutout in goal for the Tigers.
Montour finished the regular season 11-3-0 overall and 10-2 in the section, with both section losses coming to Moon. Both teams will advance to the WPIAL playoffs.
Moon coach Bill Pfeifer called Dydek’s goal “a team effort,” noting that the winning play began with the Tiger defenders winning possession on a ball played by the Spartans. Moon then worked upfield by stringing together a half-dozen passes, switched the ball outside and “then played a great diagonal ball through the defense to Kendall – and she was composed to place the ball into the far post,” Pfeifer said.
Moon, which has won seven straight section titles, has won five WPIAL championships under Pfeifer, with the most recent one coming in 2022. Last year, fifth-seeded Moon won its opening-round game but lost in the quarterfinals to No. 4 Plum.
Moon also has won five PIAA titles, going back-to-back in 2016-17 and then capturing three straight crowns from 2021 through 2023.
Montour also won its opening-round WPIAL playoff match a year ago, but lost to eventual runner-up Fox Chapel in the quarterfinals.
Both teams will find out their opening-round opponents Wednesday.
