The Moon Area girls volleyball team captured its own Moon Invitational Tournament title Saturday by defeating Trinity, 25-22, in the championship match.
Moon won its opening match over Neshannock, 25-21, then edged Hopewell, 25-23, in the quarterfinals. The Tigers earned a bye in the semifinals while Trinity beat West Allegheny, 25-12, setting the stage for the final match.
Trinity earned a berth in the semifinals by beating Montour, 25-19. The Spartans won their first-round match defeating Knoch, 25-14.
In other first-round action, Hollidaysburg beat Alderdice, 25-10, West Allegheny topped Burrell, 25-16, Trinity beat Central Valley 25-18 and Hopewell edged Fort Cherry, 25-23.
West Allegheny slipped past Hollidaysburg, 25-23, in the other quarterfinal match.
Carlynton 3, Steel Valley 0
The Cougars posted a sweep of the Ironmen, winning by scores of 25-13, 25-12 and 25-22. No other details were available.

The Tigers lost for the first time this season Saturday, falling in a WPIAL non-section match
The loss left the Tigers with an overall mark of 4-1-0 going into Monday’s match on the road against West Allegheny. Moon is 3-0-0 in Class 3A Section 2 play.
The Rams scored with about 2 minutes, 30 seconds remaining in the first overtime to snap a 1-1 tie and held on for the win.
“It was a really good game,” Moon coach Bill Pfeifer said afterward. “It was fun to be a part of.”
Riley LaFayette scored the only goal for Moon.
CROSS COUNTRY
Carlynton junior Ethan Moldovan sped to a third-place finish Friday in the Class A boys race that was part of the 23rd annual Red, White & Blue cross country meet held at White Oak Park.
Moldovan covered the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 42 seconds – his first sub-17 minute cross country effort. It was the junior standout’s best effort on the White Oak layout by 22 seconds.
Zac Sharara of Sewickley Academy won the race but the battle for the next three spots was a close one. Jack Iyer of Winchester Thurston wound up second, followed by Moldovan and Harlan Cooper of Shady Side Academy.
Carlynton junior Emery DelRosario placed 117th in 25:06.
On the girls side, Carlynton sophomore Maria Leithauser placed 17th with a time of 22:58 and senior Ava Pancake, who played in the MAC tennis tournament that morning, wound up 36th with a time of 24:14.
BOYS GOLF
Moon Area 194, Chartiers Valley 208
Matthew Koch shared medalist honors with a round of 36 to pace the Tigers past the Colts in a Class 3A Section 6 matchup at Montour Heights Country Club.
With the win, Moon moved to 8-1 in section play and 8-2 overall.
Cooper Fazio posted the second-best score for the Tigers (38), followed by Chris Brown (39), Ian Bonidie (40) and Eric Hartman (41). Jack Sexton of Chartiers Valley shared medalist honors with Koch by shooting a 36.
