The West Hills will be well-represented when the WPIAL begins its inaugural Girls Flag Football playoffs next week, as both Montour and Moon Area made the grade representing Section 4.
And another West Hills school came up just short.
Both Moon and Montour finished with identical section records of 10-3 to qualify as the section’s Nos. 3 and 4 representatives.
Each of the WPIAL’s four sections sent four representatives to the 16-team field, with play getting underway Tuesday, May 5, with doubleheaders at four different sites.
Sto-Rox nearly crashed the inaugural party as well, finishing 9-3.
The Vikings wound up playing one fewer game than Montour and Moon because a game with Steel Valley wound up in a scoreless tie. The referees halted that game with four minutes remaining because of bad weather.
Even if Sto-Rox had won that game to finish 10-3, it still would have missed the playoffs by virtue of losing to both Montour and Moon.
Adding salt to the wound, though, is the fact that Sto-Rox beat the No. 2 seed from the Section 4 portion of the bracket – Keystone Oaks – 32-26 – on April 28.
Moon, meanwhile, is no stranger to playoff competition, having won two straight titles before falling in last year’s title game, 12-0, to Upper St. Clair. That’s when it was known as the Steelers High School Flag Football League; the current season is the first year the WPIAL sanctioned the sport.
The Tigers are seeded No. 3 among the four Section 4 playoff participants and will take on No. 2 seed Keystone Oaks at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, at Montour High School’s Thomas J. Birko Memorial Stadium.
Montour is seeded No. 4 in the Section 4 portion of the bracket and will battle top seed Seton LaSalle at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Spartans’ home field.
The two first-round winners from Section 4 will play 8 p.m. Tuesday at Montour, with the winner of that game advancing to the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 7, at Upper St. Clair High School.
The two semifinal winners will play for the championship at 8 p.m. Thursday at the same venue.
Seton LaSalle rolled through Section 4 unbeaten at 13-0 and went 16-1 overall. Keystone Oaks finished 11-2, with its only losses coming to Seton LaSalle and Sto-Rox.
