Our Lady of the Sacred Heart used goals from three different players to build a 3-1 halftime lead, then held on in the final 40 minutes to claim a Class 1A Section 3 victory over Aquinas Academy Thursday in WPIAL boys soccer action at JV Stone Field.
The win helped the Chargers remain unbeaten overall on the season at 8-0 and also extended their flawless section record to 5-0.
Owen Minzer, Brady Hernandez and Andre Kolocouris all contributed one goal apiece for the Chargers.
Moon Area 6, Blackhawk 0
Olek Sushko led the way with a pair of goals as the Tigers cruised past the Cougars in a Class 3A Section 4 match at Blackhawk.
Moon improved to 7-3 overall with the win and 6-0 in section play.
Hayden Dunn, Laercio de Sousa, Charlie Weiler and Vinni Munizza each scored once for the Tigers, who led 4-0 at halftime. Dunn, Weiler, de Sousa and Sushko accounted for the first-half goals.
Evan Anderson assisted on two of Moon’s goals while Eric Haupt, Cullen Felton, Joey Weaver and Jocsan Castillo each set up one goal.
Will Guarino and Rocco Reilsono combined for the shutout.
Chartiers Valley 3, Montour 2 (2 OT)
Sam Miller snapped a 2-2 with a goal late in the second overtime period, lifting the Colts past the Spartans in a Class 3A Section 4 contest at Chartiers Valley.
Moises Calzedia scored Chartiers Valley’s first goal, which came in the first half, and Montour’s Tyler Fritztius tied the score eight minutes later.
The contest remained deadlocked until Miller scored with 1 minute, 50 seconds remaining in the second overtime.
Montour fell to 5-6 overall and 3-3 in section play with the loss.
Serra Catholic 3, Carlynton 2
The Eagles drilled home a free kick with a little less than 10 minutes to play to snap a 2-2 tie and beat the Cougars in a Class 1A Section 3 matchup.
Xavier O’Leary and Dashiell Sargent each scored once for Carlynton, which trailed 2-1 at halftime.
The loss dropped the Cougars to 0-4-1 in section play and 0-5-2 overall.
GIRLS SOCCER
Carlynton 7, Serra Catholic 0
Riley Mauro and Shania Purdom each netted a pair of goals as the Cougars rolled past the Eagles in a Class 1A Section 3 match.
Gigi Choate, Bella D’Antonio and Mary Crawford each contributed one goal for Carlynton, which improved to 4-2 in section play.
D’Antonio also registered two assists while Sophia O’Brien set up one goal.
Choate’s goal came nine minutes into the game when she scored off O’Brien’s corner kick. Mauro scored 20 minutes later on a penalty kick to make it 2-0. Just three minutes later, Crawford scored on a feed from D’Antonio, and D’Antonio scored unassisted five minutes later.
Mauro collected her second goal on a pass from D’Antonio later in the half to make it 5-0 at intermission.
Purdom came off the bench to score twice in the second half, with the first one coming on a free kick from 18 yards out and the second on a goalie miscue.
Sewickley Academy 8, Bishop Canevin 0
The Panthers breezed past the Crusaders in a Class 1A Section 3 match played Wednesday. No scoring details were reported.
GIRLS GOLF
WPIAL Sectional
Moon Area will have three players competing in next week’s opening round of the WPIAL Championships by virtue of their performances Wednesday at a qualifying tournament held at Nemacolin Country Club.
Angelina Schild fired a 2-under-par round of 70 to advance, and teammates Liv DeGori and Aubrey Marasco also moved on. DeGori shot 80 and Marasco finished with an 84. The target score for the sectional was 91.
All three will compete Tuesday, Sept. 23, at Seven Oaks Country Club. The top 36 scorers from Round One will advance to the final round set for Oct. 1 at Sewickley Heights Country Club.
Moon Area 166, Upper St. Clair 177
The Tigers downed the Panthers in a Class 3A Section 2 clash. No further information was available.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 3, Quaker Valley 1
Leah Parker, Lola Garner and Bella Coladonato combined for 29 kills and the Chargers snapped a five-year streak of losses to the Quakers by defeating them 27-29, 25-16, 25-22, 25-16 at Quaker Valley Thursday night.
The win kept OLSH unbeaten in section play going into Tuesday’s meeting with Hopewell, with possession of first place on the line. The Chargers are 6-0 in section play and 7-1 overall.
Parker finished with 11 kills and 3 aces, Garner had nine kills and nine digs and Coladonato had nine kills and seven digs.
Others contributing to the win were Carmella Rippole with 36 assists, Sophia Wasko with 18 digs and six aces, Frankie Schlatterer with five kills and four blocks and Addy Batts with six kills.
Chartiers Valley 3, Montour 2
The Colts came from behind to edge the Spartans, 17-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-21, 15-10 in a Class 3A Section 1 contest at Chartiers Valley.
Annet Christian totaled 17 kills, five blocks and three aces for Montour while Sloane Cotten had eight kills and five aces.
Zoe Woessner finished with 18 assists and four aces for the Spartans while Cathrine Schmidt had 12 assists and three aces, Delaney Barto had 12 digs and two aces and Hailey Staub finished with seven digs an aced.
South Fayette 3, Bishop Canevin 0
The Lions swept the Crusaders in a nonsection match, winning by scores of 25-17, 25-21, 25-21. No individual statistics were reported.
West Allegheny 3, Moon Area 1
The Indians downed the Tigers by scores of 25-17, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20 in a Class 3A Section 1 game Wednesday night.
Jade Rodemoyer led Moon with 12 kills and five aces while Elina Antoniades finished with nine kills, six blocks, 10 digs and 19 assists.
Libero Danica Bacu led the defense with 24 digs and 3 aces.
Beaver County Christian School 3, Cornell 0
The Eagles swept the Raiders, 25-13, 25-19, 25-14 in a Class 1A Section 2 match at Cornell Thursday night. No individual statistics were available.
