High school roundup: OLSH, Moon claim softball victories; Sto-Rox falls in baseball

Lizzie Smith’s RBI base hit snapped a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning and gave Our Lady of the Sacred Heart a 3-2 victory over Kenston (Ohio) Friday in a girls softball game played at Pigeon Forge, Tenn.

The Chargers played a second game, against Licking Valley, but that contest ended in a 5-5 tie.

In Game 1, OLSH trailed the Chagrin Falls, Ohio, team 2-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning and had managed just three hits over the first five frames.

Sophia Wasko’s solo home run in the sixth inning trimmed Kenston’s lead to 2-1, and in the seventh, Claire Bulls drew a one-out walk to start the game-winning rally. Nevaeh Morin followed with an RBI triple to score Bulls with the tying run, and Smith’s ground ball single brought home Morin with the game-winning run.

Wasko had two of the Chargers’ six hits. Camryn Hummel allowed nine hits and two runs in her seven innings of work, walking three and striking out three. She also had a triple at the plate.

In Game 2, the Chargers again came from behind but this time had to settle for a tie.

OLSH trailed 5-1 going into the fifth inning before pushing across four runs to tie the score at 5-5.

Wasko’s three-run inside-the-park home run was the big blow, pulling OLSH to within a run at 5-4, and the tying run scored on an error.

Moon Area 2, South Fayette 0

Addyson Warren’s leadoff home run in the fifth inning gave the Tigers the only run they needed and Katie DeMarco allowed just one hit in a record-setting WPIAL Class 5A Section 3 win over the visiting Lions.

The Tigers added a second run in the sixth on Abby Warnagiris’ RBI single, which brought home Sydney Ray, who had doubled to lead off the inning.

Brenna Dunn’s two-out single in the fourth inning was the only hit surrendered by DeMarco, who walked only one and struck out a school-record 16 batters.

Union 16, Bishop Canevin 0

Maddie Settle and Irelyn Fisher each had three hits and drove in two runs to lead the Scotties past the Crusaders in a Class 1A Section 1 game that went just three innings.

Union collected 15 hits in all, including two each by Olivia Williams and Navaeh Hunt. Scotties pitcher Korynne Shannon held Bishop Canevin without a hit and struck out eight batters.

BASEBALL

Brashear 16, Sto-Rox 1

The Bulls struck for six runs in each of the first two innings and cruised past the Vikings in a non-section game that went just three innings at Sto-Rox.

Brashear parlayed four hits, a hit batsman, a balk, an error and two wild pitches into six runs in the first inning. Nicholas Saroken’s two-run single was the key hit in that frame.

In the second, Aiden Smith had a two-run single, while two balks, an error and a fielder’s choice accounted for the other four runs.

Sto-Rox’s lone run scored on an error in the second inning. The Vikings did not manage a hit.
