WPIAL GIRLS SOCCER
Both Carlynton and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart passed their first-round tests in the WPIAL Class 1A girls soccer tournament, which got underway Tuesday night.
Gigi Choate’s goal with roughly five minutes to play in the first overtime period lifted Carlynton to a 2-1 victory over Eden Christian at North Allegheny.
And at Springdale, OLSH edged Aquinas Academy, 1-0, on Olivia Chimenti’s goal midway through the second half.
In Carlynton’s win, Choate drove home the game-winner from a shot just outside the 18-yard mark to send the Cougars into a quarterfinal-round matchup Saturday against the winner of Tuesday night’s match between top seed Sewickley Academy and No. 16 The Ellis School.
Carlynton, seeded No. 9, trailed eighth-seeded Eden Christian 1-0 at halftime before Riley Mauro tied the score off an assist from Bella D’Antonio early in the second half.
Choate, D’Antonio, Mauro and Mary Crawford all were named All-Section for the Cougars, who improved to 11-7-1 overall with Tuesday’s victory.
OLSH, now 8-6-1, will take on second-seeded Bentworth Saturday at a time and place to be determined. Bentworth advanced by taking down 15th-seeded Freedom, 3-2, Tuesday night.
OLSH’s Sydney Trippe set Chimenti’s game-winning goal in motion when she carried the ball up the field and played a through ball to Lizzy Day. Day then slotted the ball across to Chimenti, who was crashing the back post less than 10 yards from the goal, and she finished it off.
PIAA GOLF
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart senior Jonah Schollaert fell short in his bid to capture the PIAA Class 2A golf championship Tuesday, as he finished in fourth place after shooting an even-par 72 on Penn State’s White Course.
Schollaert, who won the WPIAL championship earlier this month, also shot 72 Monday, leaving him four strokes behind the leader, Cole Powell of Scranton Prep, going into Tuesday’s final round.
Powell followed up his 68 with a 69 Tuesday, and his total of 137 proved to be two strokes better than Fairview’s Anthony LaBoda, who shot 65 Tuesday after opening with a 74 Monday.
Luke Sikora of Greensburg Salem finished third with a two-day total of 140 by posting a 71 Tuesday.
Schollaert said afterward his round Tuesday went similar to Monday; his driver game was a bit improved, but his putting let him down on a couple occasions.
“It was a little annoying, but I’ll take fourth,” said Schollaert, who finished tied for second at last year’s PIAA tournament. “Obviously you want to win, but I’m not mad about it. It was a pretty good way to go out.”
Schollaert said the conditions, which were less than ideal Monday, were a bit better.
“It was a little colder but not as windy,” he said. “The greens were still a little soft and slow – similar to (Monday).”
Given that he entered play Tuesday four strokes behind Powell, Schollaert said he tried to be a bit more aggressive. “But the course didn’t have that many opportunities,” he said.
Schollaert won’t have any time to rest, as he’s scheduled to board a plane Wednesday morning and head to New Mexico, where he’ll compete in the under-17 PGA Junior League Championship, which will take place Oct. 23-26 at Twin Warriors Golf Club in Santa Ana Pueblo, N.M.
In Tuesday’s final round of the PIAA Class 3A girls tournament, Moon Area’s Liv DeGori wound up in a three-way tie for 20th place after firing a 77.
That gave DeGori a two-day total of 161, leaving her deadlocked with Megan Choi of Harriton and Mina Benedetto of West Chester Rustin.

Blackhawk 3, Moon Area 2
Dominic Giocondi scored 65 seconds into overtime to lift the Cougars past the Tigers Monday night in a PIHL Class A contest at RMU Island Sports Center.
After a scoreless first period, Clayton Foster gave Moon a 1-0 lead with just under 2 minutes to play in the second period.
Blackhawk tied the score at the 10:15 mark of the third period on Daniel Ostrom’s power play goal, but Moon’s Tanner Desselle answered just eight seconds later on assists from Jordan Rieke and Logan Rieke to make it 2-1 Moon.
Cooper Keister’s goal with a little less than four minutes to play pulled Blackhawk even at 2-2, setting the stage for overtime.
Meadville 12, Montour 4
